teachers in the UK. I've taken many groups of
trainees and teachers to the Gambia anad they
use their experience to teach about the Gambia
in the UK.
One of my contact in the Gambia is Nfansu Touray
from Mandinari. He qualified as a marine engineer
at the Regional Maritime College in the Ghana.
I've passed your email address on to him, so he
might contact you. He's interested in working in

I was given the name Umo Kousum or Umi by the imam when I was visiting The
Gambia as a volunteer in late May, early June (when I remember the name of the

back, and hopefully going back to my birthplace, Liberia, when things stabilize.
I enjoyed your Web site which was recommended by my dear friend Nana Ataa Ofosu

Gambia College. I must say that it was the most challenging and most rewarding
time of my long career in education. I will never forget the warm welcome I
received from people everywhere I went - from Banjul to Basse. My special thanks
to my students at Gambia College for accepting a white American and responding
so enthusiastically to my teaching. I know many of them have gone on to continue
their education at home and elsewhere. I am proud of those who are now teachers
and headmasters in The Gambia and wish them well. I would welcome email from
any of my wonderful friends and students there.

MANAGEMENT DEVEVOPMENT INSTITUTE FROM 1986-1988. I FOUND THE GAMBIA TO BE A MOST
WONDERFUL AND FRIENDLY COUNTRY, I AM VERY DISHEARTENED TO LEARN THAT STUDENTS
WERE FIRED UPON BY LOCAL TROOPS. IT IS MY SINCERE HOPE THAT A MORE ENLIGHTENED
GOVERNMENT HAS COME TO POWER.
THE JAWARA GOVERNMENT HAD ITS PROBLEMS BUT I NEVER HEARD OF MASS MURDER OF
CIVILIANS. AT THE TIME I WAS IN THE GAMBIA THE MILITARY WAS BEING RECRUITED AND
TRAINED. ARMIES ALWAYS KILL PEOPLE.
ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE, LAMIN JATTA WAS THE NUMBER ONE AMATEUR GOLFER IN THE
GAMBIA AND HE WAS A MEMBER OF MY STAFF (A FINE FELLOW) IF YOU HAVE HEARD OF HIM
AND KNOW HOW HOW I CAN CONTACT HIM PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

end,and this is really to the goverments will that no big bank can just treat
hard working gambians as they wish.this case is a typical example of what has
been going on in the gambia during jawara,s time and think how many gambians
have loose their properties because they were not strong enough to fight for
their rights. I am hoping that there will be an investigation as to why there was
falsified documents from our courthouse and who did that. I applaud the goverment
for not submitting to presure.

When we in The Gambia in April 2001 we were able to make recordings of
this superb musician and singer who we had met on previous visits. These
recordings have now been mastered and released on CD.
One of our intentions in doing this have been to draw attention to his
wonderful talent, so that he can fulfil his ambition of bringing his
wonderful music to a wider audience and to enable him to reach a point
where he will be able to tour and gain the recognition he clearly
deserves.
Another intention would be help him and his extended family financially by
selling these albums. We fully intend that every profit made from this
release be paid to the musicians involved in this project. Stating that
this has been our objective all along has encouraged others involved to
give their services free and thus we would like to express our thanks to
Jim Ward for his work in mastering and Jon Dudley of Downland Creative for
the booklet design. Anyone who has visited West Africa will know how much
ordinary families are in desperate need of financial support.
Have a look at the attached publicity handout and then decide to buy it.
Or buy two! One for yourself and one for the Christmas present for that
friend or relative whom you cannot think what to buy.NEW CD
JALI SHERRIFO KONTEH MANSALOU
THE GREAT KINGS OF AFRICA
COMPOUND SOUNDS CS 01
These are the first recordings of a wonderful young singer and musician
who is clearly destined for a great future as a leading exponent of West
African traditional music. The son of Alhaji Bai Konte and the brother of
Dembo Konte, Sherrifo learned from both and has become an outstanding
musician in his own right.
The kora has been described as Africa's greatest musical instrument.
The earliest references to it date back to the eighteenth century though
it may be older. It is unique to the Manding people of West Africa. In
recent years the instrument has become more widely known through the
playing of some remarkable virtuosos, nearly all of whom come from the
"jali" or "griot" families. These are the
hereditary orators, musicians and singers who have played such a vital
role in their societies over the centuries, recording orally the history
and genealogy of their people, noting customs, laws, archives and
composing songs honouring famous figures. They were able to promote a
realisation and awareness of a rich historical heritage that can be traced
back to the great Manding king Sunjata Keita who ruled over the huge
Empire of Mali in the 13th century.
Sherrifo comes from one the most famous of the jali families from a town
that is the home of many griot families. All his life he has been steeped
in this rich tradition. He has a highly developed and inventive technique
playing the kora which scintillates and sparkles and compliments his
commanding singing. Some of his songs reflect the long tradition that he
is a continuing part of; others comment on contemporary social mores. He
performs them all with a passion and commitment that make them truly
engaging listening.

41-years-old and finally able to piece together and understand what has been a conundrum mainly due to deception and ommission for centuries by so-called Western authorities on the subject. I am further enlightened thanks to Chiekh Anta Diop's books which are helping me piece it all together along with study from the bible. I am now able to determine when parts of biblical scripture and verse have been left out and who the Ancients were. I have just finished reading "African Civilization" Myth or Reality and am beginning to read "Civilization or Barbarism". I have ordered Africa Precolonial and hope to have it soon. (I've been waiting 2 weeks now) I can't seem to locate a telephone number for Lawrence Hill Books.
I am an African-American Journalist, now taking a hiatus. I am in the process of writing a history book for my son so that he'll know his ancestry and avoid becoming a psychological slave in this country. Thanks for the info on your website. I was afraid upon researching about Dr. Diop that I might find he had died insidiously.

I hope to be able to meet a lot of nice people, and to get away from the dark and cold Sweden for a while. If you have any experience of the Gambia Tourist Support, which I found on the Web, please let me know what you think of them, should I join? Is it a reliable organization? Or would we be better off with the travel agency? It seemed to me, that this organization aimed to help out the local people, and not just feeding money into a foreign-owened company. Would be grateful for your comments, Best regards, Malin

welcomed into people's houses as part of the family and even the little school
that we visited made us feel very special. We cannot wait to return and would
love to hear from you.
