To me it makes sense that any investment in further education goes to the university, They will be accountable for how the money is spent and the students results.
Sister Omega the only thing that will stop the african brain drain isnot education, but good employment, good salaries and other freedoms we take for granted.

EG If a Gambian is trained to be a doctor he or she has every right to a high standard of living, plus further professional development plus freedom of movement for leisure activities. (ie visa to visit other countries). If Gambia cant provide that they will move to countries that can.

I had originally thought that because of the Muslim faith people who were trained might stay put for the greater good. But in Gambia people dont seemed bound by that. They would happily go abroad to provide for their own family without a second thought for the 'greater good'.

Some uk doctors are guilty of the same, going to USA or Australia, but the majority stay in the Uk and pay back their training by treating people and training future doctors.

Jawara being blamed for not bringing DEVELOPMENT to his home village Barajally!!!!! More than anything else, Jawara was sensitive to his environment. He knew that what belongs to Gambia is a collective property. By his clear mode of reasoning, he understood that diverting public goods for selfish interest was/is nothing sensible people endorse. Jammeh on his part is taking everything in Gambia as his private belonging and that is awkward and very bad thinking. Gambiabev made it quite clear. To be accountable, funds of that nature and for such purpose are better placed in specifiied controlled accounts. It is not proper that Jammeh sits somewhere in the Kanilai villas to command the army and monies of Gambia. There is no justification for diverting such huge funds in the name of Kanilai Village Development. No development expert worth the name can defend the strategic rationale for establishing an Academy of Science and Mathematics way out there in Jammeh's Kanilai. That is just like an extension of his zoo and farming schemes. Jammeh himself is not serious about development by this very move. Let any development expert from around the globe seek to justify this move and make a mockery of the title. What is happening with the Primary Teacher's Traning College, the Higher Teachers' Certificate - HTC? Do they have a faculty of Mathematics and Science ? This is another big joke. Jammeh is not the expert to direct special disciplines like this. Additional boreholes in Kanilai will serve better purpose for now. If Jammeh conceives the idea to develop expertise for Science and Mathematics in Gambia, he is better off passing that responsibility to more competent and responsible subject matter specialists. For the new Minister of Higher Education, this is the wrong leg in an unsuitable territory.

I am hoping to come to Gambia to do VSO. If I do it wil be based in Brikama at the teacher training college and I will be dealing with enabling special needs pupils to achieve their potential. If I get the post it will start in Sept 2008. I read the job description and felt it was for me.

There are lots of obstacles along the way! It sorts out the people best suited to the task.

I have a house, 2 daughters, an ex husband, 2 parents, a dog and a cat.......... perhaps I am too grounded in the UK?

Any investment in Education is and will always be welcome. However, Jammeh's motives are always questionable in many sense. He play games with Gambian political and social life in a way that will have detrimental effects by all means in the long run. Jammeh is self centred, bias and above all greedy in many aspect. Before building such an institution, there has to be rational factors and requirements that should be put into consideration inorder to establish the best strategic location. Many Gambians will truely welcome such an institution. But, why his home town? In any sense Kanilai is not a suitable place.

Bro Karl you right, Any education development is welcome. I don't see any wrong in building an academy in Kanilai because it is part of the Gambia, may be the way it's been done. I for one would welcome the move to build more acamedy institutes inorder to reduce the rulal-uband migration. If all development projects are decentralised, which can creat more job opportunities and better leaving conditions, I don't think it will be wise enough to spend half a million on an empty piece of land in the Kombos whiles in the rural area, the only thing you need to is buy cola nut and give to the alkalo and he will give you the equavelent of a football field to build your house at lesser cost as well. I can remember Mr Collier of nusrat high school onec said it cost fulas D25.00 to build a house because they only buy cola nut and give it to the villagers to build it cos is a small hut. Hey fulas don't think am been tribalist because all my parents are fulas. I don't see myself as a fula because whenever I think of that I said to myself am been tribalist. I only believed that am a Gambia and a human being and am not better than anyone, Because ALLAH says in the Quran I only make you into tribes to make you lifes easy. May Allah forgive me if I qout the verse wrongly cos am human and not perfect.

A Science and Mathematics Academy in Kanilai? Ridiculous. Who will go there for studies? I can't believe the Taiwanese Ambassador gave the money for this strange purpose. Maybe it was really bribery. I am sure that after a short while nothing will ever be heard about the project. And the money? Gone with the wind, vanished in the air, diffunded into the pockets of.... Ooops, did I say anything? A Science and Mathematics Academy should be part of the Gambian University; they should have the money.

When will Gambians come bold? This fellow is taking a whole nation for ride many times in a row. Each time he comes up with schemes like, it is another avenue to tap donations from unwilling business people. It starts with the tricky crooks who make fat slots as starter. Next the radio and TV annouces those making fat donations. That is all to serve as motivation for some but also a warning for others. For the Taiwanese Embassy, they a bunch of poison infected on our national economy. This is not the way development aid is provided. This is wrong. Gambia remains in serious trouble. There is reason to believe that the talk about a THE ADCADEMY may die down with the swallowing by the big Kanilai fish, of this huge bulk of Dollars. Does anyone wonder how Jammeh is so much connected to THE AMERICAN DOLLAR? It is also in US Dollars that Jammeh dips into his pocket to dish out free money to praise singers in public. Fake or true, Dollars circulate faster in Gambia than many other foreign currencies do. Is the state or Jammeh into money laundering?
