Hi Serenata, I look forward to the your coming book.

Some years ago we had a series of articles in our Magazine Djembe on Cross-cultural marriages. The theme was called "The Price of Love". Some articles are in Danish but you will also find some in English. I think you can get some insperation in the magazine below.

Djembe no. 21

Your suggest is highly appreciated, Momodou! Where can I get the magazine? The few words of my Danish have been sleeping for a long time, but in written form I think I'll understand the texts.

Serenata, I had my nightmares learning Dutch. It was one of the compulsery subjects at college and you have to pass inorder to continue. Can you imagine I used to dream at night in Dutch You know we never learn Dutch in Gambian Schools.

The articles of this particular Djembe issue can be read or downloaded here: http://www.djembe.dk/no/21/index.html

Back issues are also at http://www.djembe.dk/djembe/backissu.html

Thanks, Momodou, I downloaded the English articles and after a quick look I think they are very good. But I think I overestimated my abilities in reading Danish... Anyway, I'll try. German and Danish are from the same language group, so it MUST work. Sometimes it helps if you speak out a word, and from the sound (I know the pronunciations because as a teenager I used to go to Denmark on holidays with my family; Blokhus, Løkken, Alborg, etc.) I can guess it. There must be an online-dictionary, too.

My nightmare was, after Latin, French. This is particularly shameful because my family is partly of French origin...

Greetings all... Momodou, you said:

I used to dream at night in Dutch

That reminds me, sometimes I think in Spanish, which I learned all through high school, but I've forgotten a lot of, though, I think in whatever Spanish I can remember, and sometimes I will accidentally speak in Spanish. Maybe it's the reggaeton / salsa or something.

Anyway, I've really enjoyed this discussion, and there really isn't much more to add, except to say that honest, and mabye brutal, unflinching honest at times, I think it he key, because a little honesty now can avoid huge problems later.

Also, the fact that you can't marry people who nursed from the same mtoher is an Islamic concept, so I'm not sure if it's a strictly Gambian cultural thing, or an Islamicly influenced one. But in my basic / raduimentary knowledge of fiqh, definitely, two people who suckled from the same mtoher are not permissible for marriage. And btw, yes, I'm Muslim, just in case anyone asks.

Take care all.
