Compatriots,

Sound off your opinions! An unfair verdict by Jammeh's mercinary judges has done it again.

... and some cement brained sycophants want us to be diplomatic and reasonable with the swollen pig and his cohorts.

Its unfortunate that the only reaction to this tyranny would be more keyboard jockeying.

http://www.gainako.com/news/news/2009/08/06/press-release-gpu-condemns-cruel-conviction-of-six-journalists-in-the-gambia.html

Hi Bro Ansu et al,

I join the rest of you to condemn the unfair verdict on the 6 journalists in the strongest of terms. Since the damage has been done already, we have to brainstorm on the way forward for unity and how to counter the capricious administration continually. We have to give hope to those whose voices are being cut short....and they didn't commit any crime other than empowering our people...and they will be prisoners of conscience.

Should I be of any use/help regarding this matter, I am making myself completely available for anything.

Down with mercinary judges!

Down with oppressors!

Down with hypocrites!!

Long live the media!!!

Sincerely,

yj

That was very sad news indeed, but it was no big surprise if any thing I expected to see this actual outcome. This is a man who does the judge and jury on accused persons sending them to jail as he throws the keys to Davy Jones locker. One thing is for sure this would not diminish the resolve of our people to regain their freedom. If you are to worry about people take care of messing about with the silent and seemingly cowed individuals, they could turn out to be very sharp and focussed on their needs and when they finally make a move it comes as a surprise to those who proverbially sat on their nose. Yahya may be feeling that he has subdued our people but that is what would be his undoing as Gambians are nobody's fool or servant or serf. They are waiting for an opening and like he did , they would be very careful of not failing when then they do strike. Some writers have described Gambian as deadly silent , there is a reason for this and it would come to light one day, the Mandeng people say that the roaring lion hardly gets it's prey, but through stealth and resolve the hunting pride gets to their target and gain a meal for the day. Let us wait and see where all this will lead us to.In closing these remarks I join all others in praying for the said journalists who have been jailed even before they were tried and hope they can withstand the trials and tribulations of prison life, I know that they were not unaware of the dangers of the chosen profession under such a brutal rogue regime. Long live the people of conscience down with the dictatorial regime of the Gambia a disgraceful blot on our common conscience and history

This is very unfair to the Gambian Democracy and should be condemned in the strongest of terms. The case should definitely be appealed. This kind of judgment can only be carried by mercenary judges.

My hearth is with the prisoned journalists their family and kids, in particular Sarata who is breast feeding a six month old baby.Is your turn today and remember its not going to end with you alone, many are on the way to mile 2 prison soon as history has taught us in the process of gaining freedom under harsh Dictatorship.They are all brave men and women and i said bravo to you all.The entire nation was anticipating this outcome since the president has already declared yor sentencing in a national tv interview before the court even decides, who is surprise? Not me, What a justice;;;;;;;;;;;;

Let those who massage Jammeh's bad and opressive rule in the Gambia hang their heads in shame. Madiba, you once said foroyaa is operating in the Gambia without any problems, can you say that now?
Tyranny should never allow to happen and sadly in our case, people defend Jammeh for all the wrong reasons and he takes advantage of that misguided supportn . No amounts of roads, Tv or any structure can compensate for wrong doings against innocent Gambians. But we have become so stone cold, remorse is something strange to consciousness. down with Yaya!

Gambians should all get up, lawyers, students, journalists, and others, and match to prison with these six journalists. Let the Jammeh-government lock up every body...
But that is not going to happen, not in the Gambia. The Gambia is not Pakistan where lawyers can bring down a government, or Thailand where street mobs can force a president out of office.
My sense is that the case will be appealed, and the Gambia Court of Appeal will affirm the convictions anyway. Jammeh will then have his last chance whether to pardon or have the GPU-6 sent to jail. There is a likelihood he will pardon or find some other face-saving way of letting them off the hook. The U.S. Secretary of State, Ms. Clinton, international and regional human rights groups would perhaps have put some fear into his head by then.
But what ever happens, the jailing of these fine men and woman will not be the end of our demand for free speech in the Gambia and Africa. More Gambians and Africans must be willing to go to jail in defense of free speech, and the publicity that will come to bear as the battle between free speech and censorship-between freedom and tyranny-unfolds-will eventually lead to our victory. The victory of free speech over censorship, the victory of freedom over tyranny...

I have an idea. Why not Kayjatta go to Gambia and print one of his fine article that critics Gambian Politics.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

It is indeed sad to wake up to a sad news as this one. But, as Winston Churhill once said, optimists find opportunity in every difficulty.

The opportunity for us in this time of reflection is that we, as Gambians, based on what we have learned, must not allow our servants (leaders in public office) to impose non-Gambians on us in the future (in the name of so-called Pan-Africanism) only for them to become our nightmares.

My regards to Momodou, Santa, Dalton, kanibaa, and all you wonderful people out there. I have been away for a very long time, but not a day passes by without visiting this site for your invaluable contributions.

Well done guys, thumbs up.

I have a question for legal minds here. How long are the six journalists jailed for? Freedom reported 6 years yesterday, while all others reported 2 years. I am especially confused about count 2 and 3 (A fine of Dalasis 250,000 (US$10,000) or a two year prison term). How does count 2 and 3 run concurrently with other 4 counts (2 year prison term without any option of a fine)

It appears that they will serve only one two terms, because the sentences run concurrently not consecutively...

How about if they can pay the fines for the two counts, how long would be their sentence? On the other hand, if they failed to pay the fine how long would be their sentence? My problem is the reason for the fine? Who in his right mind would pay the fine and still serve the same length of prison term?
