Gambia: Public Servants Throng Kanilai Farm The Daily Observer (Banjul)
4 September 2007 Posted to the web 4 September 2007
Ousman Darboe
Staff of various state departments, led by their Secretaries of State have thronged President Jammeh's farm in Kanilai, in response to his clarion call for people to go back to the land for the attainment of a sustainable food self-sufficiency.
Speaking to journalists at the President's rice field, Kebba Sanyang, Attorney General and Secretary of State for Justice said: "This is a farm that belongs to every Gambian and many other people have said this over and over again.
We are here to demonstrate our support for the President and to be part of the call to join in and make farming a reality in this country".
"Agriculture is really a very important sector in this country," he said, adding this was not the first time they assisted the President on his farm. "We are showing our loyalty to the Head of State and assist him in this kind of programme.
They are happy to be here and nobody has forced them. They came on their own free will. All what I did was to facilitate the process and I am happy that this was done," he said.
"You know that the proceeds from the farm is for every Gambian, in the area of health, education, etc. A lot of people are being sponsored from this farm. And a lot more Gambians are benefiting from this farm in many different ways. This is why we are all here to see that the work goes on," SoS Sanyang noted.
Fatou Lamin Faye, Secretary of State for Basic and Secondary Education, said their presence at the President's farm was a "moral obligation" as the proceeds from the farm is used to sponsor a lot of students in country.
"The President has the programme to support girls education. I think we should support him more in his endeavours, especially in his foundation. I think he is doing more than enough. I have my own farm and last year all the proceeds from the farm was donated to Jammeh Foundation for Peace. There are some students who dropped out because of lack of funding," SoS Lamin Faye explained.
Yankuba Touray, Secretary of State for Fisheries and Water Resources, said the President's support for Gambians cannot be overemphasised. "The farm is for Gambians and not for the President. Whatever is derived from this goes to support poor Gambians through the Jammeh Foundation for Peace. And the Jammeh Foundation for Peace has given a lot of scholarships to people.
Our presence here today is for ourselves. I cannot even express his support for Gambians in words. He has done it and we all have been seeing it and he is still doing it," SoS Touray told journalists.
He then described the President as a revolutionary and a farmer, considering his family background.
Angela Colley, Secretary of State for Tourism and Culture, amplified that all the proceeds from the farm goes back to the communities. "I have come here with a lot of people from the department and tourism stakeholders, including fruit sellers, hoteliers, among others. Even the Hotel School members and staff are here with me," she confirmed.

| I will not work for anybody for free , except an indigent. To tell people that Kanilai farm is for all Gambians is the biggest illusion of the century. Does the Gambian people even know how much Jammeh makes from that farm , and what percentage goes to the scholarships ? Does the Gambian people have any say in the affairs of that farm at all other than to go and toil there against their will ? |

Bro. Kay,
Apparently, a lot of questions should be directed to that farm. One of our Sintet fellows (name with-held) was a victim of this same farm, accused of stealing farm materials & farm money. He was re-called shortly after sitting down there for a year & half. Secondary, Aziz Tamba's gang are all paying the prices of being good farmers at the Kanil lai farm. The farm is more of a propaganda tool than it is for the people of the Gambia.
Will find out more about this farm |

If it is true that all Gambians profit from the Kanilai farm, and if it's true that, as Yankuba Touray says, the farm is for Gambians and not for the President, I can see nothing wrong in working there. Of course it would be the best if this farm was made official property of the Republic of The Gambia. I don't think that this happened already, right?
But if the Kanilai farms were state property, one could even extend the system and invite jobless people to work there for their subsistance.
Anyway, I appreciate the efforts of the Gambian government to get people back to their farms and stop the rural exodus. Of course they should do much, much more to make farming profitable. |

Serenata: what is happening at the Kanilai farm is nothing other than exploitation of the Gambian people.Civil servants and others are flocking to Jammeh's farm and toil under the sun without compensation (pay) because of fear of their jobs and lives. It is unthinkable that cabinet ministers such as Yankuba Touray and others will mobilize masses to labor for the president for free. Can you imagine a senator or a secretary of state of the U.S. calling people to meet at George Bush's Texas farm and break their back without payment ? Nobody will even listen , American people are truly free. Gambian people need to be really conscious , that is the only way they can safeguard their freedoms. Jammeh has not made any strides in returning people to the land . Agriculture in the Gambia is left in the hands of the older people , all the young people are in Serekunda , Banjul and Bakau , and without jobs. I do not blame them! |

I support 'BAK TO THE LAND POLICY!' 100%.
The rationale is that a farm for one (BIG MAN) rakes millions of dalasis into that BIG MAN'S PROJECT or so-called FOUNDATION! What if there were STATE FARMS or ARM FORCES FARMS, URBAN & VILLAGE YOUTHS FARMS (YOUTH ACTION GROUPS & NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICES), MUNICIPAL / AREA COUNCIL FARMS and / or COMMUNITY MIXED FARMING revamp Don't you think that there would have been some sort of self-sufficiency (e.g massive savings of government expenditure to feed the army), more agricultural development, improvement of welfare for the community
Don't forget to ACCOUNT the livestock and herds under precedence of TRANSPARENCY, ACCOUNTABILTY & COMMISIONS OF ENQUIRIES, please? Here we have the Buffaloes, cattle, sheep, goat, pigs etc!
Former President lost just under 150 buffaloes that were looted and butchered when chuck out of office by coup (of July 22nd) to compare and contrast our developments & political landmarks.

Kayjatta, if it is really forced labour for the president's purse it is of course perverted. So, what is Kanilai really? Opinion is deeply divided on this issue. I would like to know the truth.
But why don't the younger people see that hanging around in Kombo without a job is not at all an alternative to farming? Okay, I can talk sitting here in a comfortable house in Europe, doing a job that doesn't make me sweat and doesn't break my back. I am sure that one day on a Gambian rice field, out in the harsh sun, would kill me. But with farming and gardening at least one has enough to eat. |
