Sources have it that president Yahya Jammeh is now the new owner of land traditionally for the people of Barajally (native home of deposed president Jawara) along the river side village. In recent times, community lands become an extension of Jammeh's property and material empire. Communal labour is mobilised by influential members to work on Jammeh's Farms all around the country as part of political patronage. Hardly a day goes without an announcement that a community or public servants volunteered working on one of the Jammeh Farms. At first it was a call for Back to the Land. Now it is one of Back to My Farm.

| If Yahya is mobilising people to work and then to produce goods for sale from community lands for the benefit of that community then thats good isnt it? but if Yahya is selling all the produce of that land and putting in the money recieved to his own pocket then that's not good,can your source establish what is happening to the money from the sale of produce from these community lands? |

Where the cleverest of the citizenry don't know what Yahya is doing with money coming into the country in our collective name as a nation, I wonder how anyone is able to know what Yahya does with money coming from the sale of produce in his PRIVATE farms. Maybe you can can dig further. A genuine head of state would mobilise resources to let people produce for themselves. The one who takes all community land for himself is greedy and selfish. That is not the best example of a leader. |

| I cannot dig further as I dont have a source with inside knowledge as you do,can what your source is telling you be verified by anyone else,for instance which political figure has benefited from this land grab that you talk about,or is all your information based on rumor control?Many people in Gambia squabble amongst themselves,so no decision is ever made maybe Yahya taking over such community lands and welding them together and giving direction to a project is a good way to stop the squabbling,everything requires money and the local dont have money,so no development. |

Before Yahya's 22 July coup, there was a whole government department known as Community Development. There were also Mixed Farming Centres in various locations. It is not the business of a president to take upon himself the task of DEVELOPING Community Land. Besides, this is not so much about development for the community. It is more a matter of Yahya possessing and the community being dispossessed. I will not call that Community Development. I will call it LAND GRABBING.
You asked for sources. Help yourself by reading some other sites including Gambia Journal (www.thegambiajournal.com) Also on The Gambia Echo (www.thegambiaecho.com) They have been generous with details of Jammeh's land grabbing. Above all, the "back to the land" is not new thunder blow from Jammeh. Even at Kanilai, all the news relay on Jammeh's farm and not Kanilai Community Farm. Why a president prefers embracing all that communal land in his own good name is a development many wonder about. Amazing !! |

Not so much about the Barajally case, which is most recent. Jammeh's name is more associated with land and money much in the same way his name associates with Mr President. He is EVERYTHING to imagine. Now he is even Master Healer of all ailments. In the face of Jammeh, all scientists and medcial professionals are lairs. He is the true Doctor and Super Healer. He is so much into everything that he ends up with nothing. For Jammeh to choose being land and property millionaire in poor Gambia is quite an issue. |
