I think many people myself included do not understand the rational behind going to work on the president's farm for free. My doubts are: (1)do people go to the president's farm to show solidarity as APRC supporters? (2) or are they there for fear that when they don't show up they might loose their jobs and be accused of anti Jammeh? (3)or do they go there to work in other to be fed daily as each day may be BENECHIN,DOMODA or any other rich food which they can't have in their homes?(We must surcumb to the fact that during the raining season most homes in the rural and even urband Gambia finds it hard to eat stable food least to say balanced diet). (4)or maybe people go their because as most Africans belief a ruler is chosen by God and when he calls all patriotic citizens should answer to his/her call.Is this true? (5)Many ministers around the world ofcause would want to please their Bosses and The Gambia is no exception. So for the state ministers going to the president's farm with their department staff is no surprise but whether all the staff went of their own free will is a question and those who went but against their free will, what would happen is they openly refused is another question.
With all these questions,I now turn to the whether is ok to work on the president's farm free? Yes there is no problem to work on the president's farm.I can go and work for my leader provided the product would benefit the nation. One thing I find difficult to understand is why some people who accused of mismanagement at the Kanilai farm were prosecuted by the state? I think Kanilai farm belong to an individual and proceedings should instead be civil?Like Predident Jammeh v so and so rather than the Attorney Ganeral v ... or Inspector Ganeral v so and so.?
These are my doubts please can some one help? |

Janyanfara,
I dare sacrifice a suitable response to last part of your doubts. Regarding why fraud cases involving Kanilai Farm employees are treated as though crime against the state, this is easy to understand. Over and over, a siutation of lawlessness has been pointed here on Bantaba and by other keen observers elsewhere. Against that sincere observation, we still have die-hard jammeh extremists who refute such facts. What you have just set out is the material evidence to confirm that Jammeh is lawless and that he takes Gambia and Gambians as his personal possession. Worse days come our way as we continue to have hard currencies bounce against a Gambian Dalasi backed by peanut leaves. Matters get way off the line as Jammeh insists on dictating backwardness in Gambia, daring to call it development. There are many faces to the same fact of matters. |

| Janyafara , I am sure people go to the Kanilai farm for different reasons. Infact people go there for all of the reasons/questions you posed aboved. But that is not the actual point here. The point is that it is wrong to make people work without compensating them , especially if you have a relatioship of influence over them. The Secretaries of States mobilizing people to offer free labor on the president's farm might constitute an abuse of office because they are using the influence of their political office over people ( their employees , and others) who cannot, for fear of reprisal, refuse their demands. It is exploitation in my view, have we forgotten the meaning of slavery?. You cannot make someone work in the U.S.off the clock( without pay); it is unlawful. If the Chairman thinks Kanilai farm is for the people of the Gambia not him , they can incorporate the farm as a national entity with full operational transparency to the Gambian people. |

A good scenario about Gambia's (''Back to the Land Policy') amonsgt other nteresting things on Global (EU & ACP) states policies & strategies, mobilisation, production & exploitations, use of the land, agriculture / farming, trade etc available from related World Politics topic EPAs Harm African Farmers under http://www.gambia.dk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4272
Reading that link shows that our Agricutural policy should be top priority for the STATE (for self-sufficiency), meaningful, properly managed and competitive. |
