Santa,
This prayer sounds like the ones translated from the christian prayers book( English/french) in the local languages such as Jola, Sererer and Fula. I understand that in some churches in Senegal some masses are held in the local languages such as Serere and Jola |

Madis, enjoy the compliment. You know they dont come from me often.
Anyway, here we go:
Praise to Mindis - [the goddess of the river sine], the gracious one, the gods are with her, the most blessed among women, and blessed is the fruits of her womb, Takar - the god of wealth, Thiorak - the god of justice. Oh divine Mindis! the queen of the gods, please pray for us sinners now and at the very hour of our death.
Roog - our supreme god, is great. [Similar to Amen].
This is similar to the christian hail mary but with a pagan twist. |

Tamsir, when are you going to write that history book? I hope you consider writing one because you have a vast knowledge and I promise to be among the first to buy it.
I have learnt a lot from you about the our Senegambian history.
Keep up it up! |

tamsier, what about the black ancetral prayer. what do you think. cutesy of africawithin.com
Ancestor's Prayer
Our great African parents who are among us we humbly offer our thanks for the many blessings you have given.
We extend our love to its ultimate state of being - For the suffering that you have endured so that we may not suffer so.
Mothers of our great African nation Fathers of our African selves - We invoke you to further lead and guide us to a higher understanding
Of our true greatness - And a more encompassing dedication of love for our African people.
Parents of all African children; Guide us toward a greater unity - Guide us in a stronger African Value System and lead us into the zenith of respect and love for our people, through education and the "Family Communal Structure"
We swear upon the heritage and legacy that you have left us to uphold and sustain our rightful status on this earth, and to continue the struggle for the total mental and physical liberation of all African People.
ADUPE ARIKU BABA WA (Thank You, by the Spirit of Our Ancestors)

Thanks for that, but I honestly believe that's what bantaba is there for - to share knowledge. I also learn from all of you guys even Madiba, I know from time to time he and I dont see eye to eye, but I really do learn from him.

There are people with the surname Roog/Rog and a variation of that in different parts of the world. That's simply coincidence because the Sereres have been worshipping Roog for thousands of years. That does happen - ie: one word found in two or more cultures but with different meanings. Sometimes the serere say Roog Sene - similar to the almighty god or Roog the almighty. 'sene' is also a Senegambian family name.

That is a beautiful prayer. Is it a Zulu prayer? I have a book about the Zulu culture and history but it has few details about their religion. |

perhaps in october to celebrate black history month, I will post some question and answer session [a sort of history test] about the history of Senegambia/Western Africa. I would like to invite everyone to formulate a list of questions [ensure you know the answers] for posting. So Santanfara and everyone, you have until october to sort yourselves out, go back to your history books if you must. |

Tam,
You got it . I was infact referring to the Rog Sene/Saine. The surname saine/sene in Gambia and Senegal is serere. My Dad used to teased a serere friend of his whenever they met. He teased him, saying 'you people are very interesting! so you've got a surname for ur god? It would all end wit laughter and embraces and patting. |

Exactly. I dont know why sene though. All I know is, the sene clan are very ancient. They were one of the ancient Saltigues - priests and diviners for the Kings [lamans]. I would not be surprised if it derived from that. I invite my other serere cousins who can perhaps throw more light on this. Any sereres out there apart from me? |
