mansasulu, you are correct, i did write that, but I do not go to Gambia for this reason, so I ask you why do you think I do.
gambia over the past number of years has made allowances for the wrong type of tourist. did you know in the duty free lounge at the airport there are slot machines.
So why is gambia allowing this to happen. because they want this type of tourists, what you sow you reap. i do not think gambia needs gambling or slot machines,
the bars and restaurant are part of tourism and at present are only in a few places and controlled. But the little income that tourists generate, to taxi's, shops, restaurants and hotel that buy food locally do make some income. so if they close down this small income would be lost
i would like to see the tourist industry in Gambia changed.
PERHAPS it is because I have not been there for a year, and the change to me is not acceptable.
for your information i do not drink or smoke, slot machines,
i ask you this what islamic state can a tourist visit . Next month, i think it is the beginning of June will see the miss black beauty pageant at the sheraton hotel, strange how this can happen in a muslim state, but the miss world contest was thrown out of Nigeria.
do you not think somewhere along the line there is a two headed beast at work.
there are other types of tourists to attract

Jambo you seem to support the status quo in Gambia, because everytime we talk about reforming our society, somehow you insinuate that tourism will suffer and all the vice that comes along with it.

["right now there are certain things that holidaymakers enjoy that an islamic state would not, gambiling, casinos, women wearing shorts, alchol, sex outside marriage, think about it this would be under heavier control and restrictions within an islami state."]

I do not know you, but your postings give a lot of insight as to where you stand on the issue of reforming Gambia from one that is blindly following the west to one that is suitable to our society.

point taken, read all my postings and see if you still think that. I have always been led to believe until gambia develops something else, tourism is a contributor to the economy, if you correct me then so be it. On my last trip i stayed in a private home, and the trip before that in manji, not the senegambia areas so i have seen the negative change in tourism, but it still brings in something.
So I ask you will you change the situation

Thank you for the clarification.
Not to deviate from the topic, just curious.
Am sure you are aware of the symbolism of Sulu in mandingka.
Is there any difference between Mansa sulu and Sulu mansa?
What connotation do you give to your usage of Mansasulu?

Correct me if am wrong;
Samori was a Manding Manso that resisted colonial rule and reformed the traditional structure of governance by mandincanizing islam, he did not islamise Manding. Do you mean Gambia would be better off if she gambianises Islam or you mean she is better off being islamised?

janko ,you are asking mansasulu personally so i will not answer for him .but as a touray i will only highlight that Almamy Samouri was a great resistance fighter. he did not only mandicanise islam he also played a big role is making the animist manding people aware of islam .we the touray's ans ceesay's have a long connection . almamy samouri was taught by the ceesay kunda but later took it upon himself to challenge the french dominance and the traditional idol worship in his region .there is well documented book writen about his role is spreading islam in genuea and those area's. a book written by a british professor of the person of harold thomas . i don't aggree with some of his method's though but overall he is ok. the ceesay kunda later left it upon us tourays to spear head islam the camara were also warrior fighters but then the french end up capturing our ancestor Almamy samouri ,he was killed .may Allah bless his soul .i still cry for for him .

Santanfara,
Almami Samori was one of our greatest leaders.
I see why you are just like a Touray.
As we say "TOURAY NGANA MANDINGMORI, JANNEH NGANA MANDINGMORI, KOMMA NGAMANDINGMORI,CEESAY NGANA MANDINGMORI". In Manding , you people are the Mansas and Marabouts. So you know now that Touray, Janneh, Ceesay and Komma are the same, the differents between you Tourays are your places of settelments. I hope we can meet some day. Jalikunda have even plans to organise an evening for the history Mali Empire together with the organisation SUNDIATTA to begin with. Both the Jelis and JeliDjonos(The Kuyatehs)are going to take part. Look out for the program.
I hope you will tell your children about your great, great great grandfather.

ALHASAN , nice tribute to the mandingmoris . i also wish we could met one day. but on another note ,i am not a mori at all so i will try to learn from the njie's and other very strong gambian family traditions .
as for janko , your misunderstanding of islam and what it's stand for is not restricted to just you .if jambo stand tooth and nail to any idea of some form of islamic tradition in the gambian politics i will uderstand ,he is openly a christian but for a muslim who claim ''i am gambian first and then muslim '' you need a lot to learn about what faith is all about. the Quran states that ''enter into islam completely '' .so if you pick and choose ,well good for you .
mansasulu have answered a lot so i will not unnecessaryly elaborate on any issue.
the tourist industry is bringing much needed foriegn currency but how much nowadays .remember the all inclusive parkage .

i am not being malicous or been arrogant when i said 'lets cut the grap '. what i meant was ,if we think that at our current state we can do every thing with 100% secularist phylosophy then we are wrong. i made reference to britain and rome for the simple reason that this leaders are sworwn in using the bible not the stick .also before they go to any wars they take advice from the clergy ,the laws have every thing to do with the old tastament 'read judges in the bible . in america what principle is the constitution base on ? or more appropraitely why ban abortion ? why practice the death penalty ? why award military officers with the cross as a symbol of bravery and galantry ? heey brother i wish good governance for my people as you do . we need to have a principle that best shuit us .why would our muslim president sworn in using the quran if he can discard it at will ? so you seems to be very superficail about politics. this game is about life and death .politics is not just about human right .if that is what it should be all about then why the most advance countries lobby together to saction unfortunate country's where women ,children ,the old and men die as a result of those dragonian international power laws ? look at it this way my learned friend ,we need to identify ourslef with what can work for us . the christian will have there rights in any form of government ,they have been having those rights in the gambia for centuries .

santanfara, thank you for your words, it expressed what i was thinking, but some people on btanba do not want to admit certain things about gambia and how it is at present. If other people believed that Gambia being an islamic state is the best way for the country so be it. But i do not believe that this is what the people want.
I go to Gambia because it is Africa. people forget that.
I would like to ask a question, if gambia becomes an islamic state, i can understand what happens to the tourism it will close, or change drastically, but what about the schools/education will that change, will the students be expected to change their thoughts, not sit near each, girls separated from boys. these are signs that i see but i am sure others have things that will change within a islamic state.
what about the women who are working in the commcial sector, banking at the airports will they loose their jobs WHAT HAPPENS IN AN ISLAMIC STATE

I understand the quest for change and something new, but lets be careful of not getting from the frying pan into…………….
The problem of Gambia as many African countries is her triple heritage, her lack of self pride and a lack of national consciousness……a very complex situation.

My history books did differentiate between geography and geopolitics. Gambia as a geographical locality and did exist long before both Islam and the Berlin conference.

The Gambian customs and traditions have much more in common with her history (Manding, Mali, Kabu……so fort) than with colonialism and or Islam. That does not mean tradition is stagnant but rather dynamic, it looses some values and take new ones from generation to generation. The problem is when we get blinded by the new values and assume history valueless. For example, if my father did not tell me I was born on fitrah (?) then that knowledge is not passed on to me and its not a tradition, but if he passes it on to me it becomes a new traditional value but that does not mean history is dead from that day on.

Tradition is a practice, a means of transferring knowledge, worldview from generation to generation with the help of a set of stories, oral tradition. (The jalis play an important part here) Tradition is valuable knowledge and we have it without consciously being aware of how and why, it just is.

I did not observ islamic tendencies in, traditionalsongs, traditionalreligion, traditionalbelief, traditionalmedicine, traditionalhunting, traditionallaw, traditionalfood, traditionalstories.
Nor do I find Islamic tendencies in the folklore, the tales, music, dance, legends, proverbs, jokes and so fort.
