Kobo,
There you have it again. The issue is FEAR. If we can identify, tackle, and eliminate FEAR in all its many facets, we are half way settling Gambia on right track. All that is happening in Gambia today is linked to FEAR. Kobo, look into the wider implications of FEAR and you will easily agree that what we need tackling most urgent and IMMEDIATE is FEAR in all spheres. This is not to imply that we go the violent way in tackling FEAR. By exposing the wider ENVIRONMENT OF FEAR you will find out how other matters linked to fear can be handled. Think of this. Without FEAR and FAVOUR an atmosphere of true JUSTICE will replace this ugly state of affairs. Say no to FEAR in all its forms. |

Why do you choose the picture of Samori Touré Would you kindly tell me the meaning of “Mansasulu”.
Please explain what you mean by “We need to reform and usher in a political system that is backed by the culture, morals, and religious convictions of the majority of the Gambian people.”

Seems to be 'the western style democracy' should be main 'objective' the nation. But may i remind you that political system is not the 'objective' but it is a 'tool' to reach the main objective which is welfare of the nation.
Anyway, without economic stability implementing western democracy not realistic. Especially when gambia is the last 24th on Human Development Index just before Eritrea,Rwanda,Nigeria,Guinea,Angola,Tanzania, U. Rep. of,Benin,Côte d'Ivoire,Zambia,Malawi,Congo, Dem. Rep. of the Mozambique,Burundi,Ethiopia,Chad,Central African Republic,Guinea-Bissau,Burkina Faso,Mali,Sierra Leone,Niger.
Anyway, plese see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore#Politics_and_government for the unique political system of Singapore and their economic success. (I am not saying Singapore system is best for Gambia, however, like Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Turkey use western political system implemented to their unique realities.
One example would be from my country. Turkey, when they established parliementer system in 1920, they did not have political party. All the members were elected based on independent and they had to have consensus in the parliement. The leader of the parliement, Ataturk was also hold the administration.
Here is my perspective. First of all Gambian Presidential system. The presidential power must be reduced (shorter term, or transfer some of his or her power to other institutions, like parlemento) It may be practical if president has the power to administrate the country. But as the other developed countries, president usually abuse the power. So what can be done to guarantee "one man" abuse. Gambia is a small country, One might believe Westminister system would help political system to rely on 'one man' less.
Municipal governments should be more powerful with more respobsibility and the authority. During my presence in Gambia, I only see Police, President and army as the face of the country. Municipal governments or non-profit organizations do not have much presense. De-centralization of some services would definetly help power to be transferred to the people. |
diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.
Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

I chose the picture of Samori Toure partly because it was available and partly because of what he stood for.
Mansa means king and sulu means wolf in mandinka.
Finally, what I meant is that we need a political system that is acceptable and workable in the Gambia. Western style democracy has woefully failed in the Gambia, so we need to reform to a system that is practical. |

Thank you for the clarification. Not to deviate from the topic, just curious. Am sure you are aware of the symbolism of Sulu in mandingka. Is there any difference between Mansa sulu and Sulu mansa? What connotation do you give to your usage of Mansasulu?
Correct me if am wrong; Samori was a Manding Manso that resisted colonial rule and reformed the traditional structure of governance by mandincanizing islam, he did not islamise Manding. Do you mean Gambia would be better off if she gambianises Islam or you mean she is better off being islamised?

janko ,you are asking mansasulu personally so i will not answer for him .but as a touray i will only highlight that Almamy Samouri was a great resistance fighter. he did not only mandicanise islam he also played a big role is making the animist manding people aware of islam .we the touray's ans ceesay's have a long connection . almamy samouri was taught by the ceesay kunda but later took it upon himself to challenge the french dominance and the traditional idol worship in his region .there is well documented book writen about his role is spreading islam in genuea and those area's. a book written by a british professor of the person of harold thomas . i don't aggree with some of his method's though but overall he is ok. the ceesay kunda later left it upon us tourays to spear head islam the camara were also warrior fighters but then the french end up capturing our ancestor Almamy samouri ,he was killed .may Allah bless his soul .i still cry for for him . |

Janko, let me state from the onset that Islam is my culture. I think you are better suited contributing to the issue on the table rather than going into trivial issues like what mansa, manding, sulu are. I take it you completely comprehend my answer to your third question and to that end, Alhamdullillah.
I have made my points clear and the facts are there for all of us to see. I am not writing in any other language other than what we all understand now if you can speculate whatever you think I believe or mean, that is your prerogative. My forum name is no important. This topic is not about me so quit trying to make it about me.

My problem is I have more questions than answers.
No offence is meant. I beg your pardon, if you feel offended. I am puzzled by the complexity of the ambivalence, the depth of the triple heritage.
Having a Mandingka nickname, writing in English, quoting the Koran in Arabic and advocating for Islamic law in the Gambia…………because the western model of democracy has not worked in 40 years. There is no democracy that took 40 years to function, rather it took hundred if not hundreds of years for today’s Western so called democracies to reach this level ……….. It’s not a perfect system and different from country to country. Secondly my knowledge in English is very limited.
“We need to reform and usher in a political system that is backed by the culture, morals, and religious convictions of the majority of the Gambian people.” You have to excuse my ignorance but which culture are you referring to? Is there any difference between Islamic and Gambian cultures?
Nobody is wondering why China is where she is today. China walked her own path, through her language, culture and tradition not through Western model democracy nor Islamic Law and it took her more than 40 years to be “the power house” of the world economy it is today.
We can not climb a tree from the top.
