July and September broke all records.....of course, August when all the kids were on holiday was crap!!!!
I am already looking forward to the end of May 2007!!! My next Gambia trip! |

This weekend I am going into York again shopping. Last weekend was so crowded that I only got half the stuff done. On Sunday I am taking my daughter out for lunch to a traditional english country pub.
In between I have school work and house work. |

Didnt get to the pub, ended up at B&Q buying a wheelbarrow and then out in the country buying hay for my daughters horse. (the barrow is for mucking out). I am not into horses at all...a townie through and through, but from the age of 5 my daughter has loved horses. Even at the age of almost 17 this love hasnot worn off. She is very brave and fearless around horses.
I really could do with a three day weekend. Two days to recover from the week before at work and to do odd jobs and then the third day for all the planning and paper work for school ready for the next week.
I always put my family before my job. But then in the week that puts me under extra pressure at work. If I lived alone I would take Friday night and Saturday off and then do paper work on Sundays. In effect working 6 days a week.
Are there anymore teachers on bantaba? Can you tell me how you organise your work load and how many hours a week you work? I'm doing about 60 hrs a week at the moment and the children I teach leave me totally exhausted each evening. I don tthink I can do this for more than 2 or 3 years. Then I will go back to supply. I love the job, but it is very demanding physically and emotionally and admin wise! I like the challenge, but have to think of my long term physical and mental health too. |

Bev, i teach English, Dutch and PR at a business college here in Holland - and i agree with you totally about the threedays' weekend. Because i teach evening classes on Tuesday nights, i can have Monday mornings off. These mornings i use to make an overall scheme for the week, and fortunately i have some time to do deskwork in between classes. I used to work 75% (which in Holland would amount to 32 hours on the clock), but these days i work fulltime (44 hours, or really: the work the management thinks you can do in 44 hours, but mostly it takes me more time). I work fulltime now, because my Gambian partner came to live with me permanently last April. All his papers are now in order, he has got his fiscal number etc., but he is obliged to go to school to learn Dutch (paid for by the local authorities, which i think is fantastic) and since he has no diplomas it is hard for him to find a job and have a regular income. We also try to take care of his (very large) family at home in the Gambia. He is doing odd jobs at the moment and tries to contribute as best as he can. We are doing fine, but more income was needed to pay all the bills like for medical insurance for him (expensive in Holland) and to buy him winter clothes (he already thinks it cannot be colder than this, so he is for a surprise) and to make it possible for him to have a Dutch driver's licence. Coming home late in the afternoon on Friday, i am exhausted. On Saturdays we do some shopping and cleaning and try to see some friends, on Sundays we sleep late and take long walks in the woods or go to Amsterdam or something like that. A week is just nothing, i am always amazed at how time flies...
You know, i admire your energy on this Bantaba because it is as if you cannot be stopped. Even though sometimes people react unfairly, patronising or even downright insulting - you always come back. Sometimes you seem to be on the warpath, and then i admire your courage too. But it also makes me wonder......if you have so little time, why don't you think now and then 'oh, go f*** yourselves, i cannot be bothered because i have something better to do'? |

Anna, your man will be surprised by dutch winters!!! I hope things work for him. Being supported to learn the language is a brilliant idea and will help him alot.
Sometimes when I am very busy or feeling a bit low I think why bother with bantaba?! But I LOVE Gambia, I LOVE discussion and I am fascinated by people and what makes them 'tick'. I suppose in a way I am a bit addicted.
I have several friends from bantaba that I email privately. If you are interested in talking that way please feel free to contact me. leicesterbev@hotmail.com |

Pot calling kettle I think! What you doing this weekend Jack? All the housework whilst your daughters are out enjoying themselves? I am going to Ironbridge for a nice relaxing weekend. I've never been there before so I am looking forward to exploring the area. |

Sunday is election day in Belgium for local governments (provinces and municipalities). In the afternoon I go to count the votes. Exciting period for us because its possible there could be a change in the coalition in Oostende.

Well Eve,
Thats rather a personnal and direct question.
Its difficult to advise you who to vote for. In my opinion is the program of the socialist party closest to what I think a society has to be and to develop to.
But I do not understand what and why you say something about Bremen ? where are you living in Belgium ?
