221 Motorbikes Arrive for AU Summit Thursday 15th June 2006
By Madi Njie

The Taiwanese government, through its embassy in Banjul, yesterday donated to the Gambia government 221 motorbikes, some riding gears and spare parts worth US$1.7 million for the AU Banjul Summit.

The presentation ceremony took place at the Maintenance Service Agency in Kotu, where the motorbikes were handed over to Vice-President, Isatou Njie-Saidy, by Dr Patrick Chang, the Taiwanese Ambassador to The Gambia.

In handing over the bikes, Dr Chang reaffirmed his government’s commitment towards the welfare and development of The Gambia.

The gesture, which is part of Taiwan’s contribution towards the successful hosting of the AU Banjul summit, is to help The Gambia beef up transportation during the summit, Dr Chang said.

While extending greetings to the Gambian government and people from his president, Ambassador Chang expressed hope that the AU Banjul Summit would be a success.

He assured the Gambian authorities of his government’s unflinching support towards the development of The Gambia.

Dr Chang further disclosed that the motorbikes were manufactured by TAITEK Company Ltd in Taiwan, who, through the effort of the Taiwanese embassy in Banjul, also assisted in training some Gambian security officers on how to drive and maintain the bikes.

In response, Vice-President Njie-Saidy described the gesture as another milestone in Taiwan-Gambia relations. The Taiwanese embassy in The Gambia has been actively contributing positively in all areas of development of the country, especially in health, agriculture and youth development, she said.

The vice president therefore advised users of the motorbikes to always use and maintain them properly.

Other speakers on the occasion included Mr Richard Kao, Executive Director of TAITEK Ltd, Baboucarr Jatta, Secretary of State for Interior and Lang Tombong Tamba, Army Chief of Staff.

One litre of gas is US$1.1. With 221 motor bikes this will atleast be one thousand dollars a day during the summit. This does not include the specialised hummers for the Heads of States. You see jambo, Gambia s very rich and i will challenge anyone who tell me we are not.

May be after the summit ministers will have their own rider escorts. Where is Sankofa. He needs a lot of explanation.

Bikers in Gambia? Hell's Angels?

Its been said many times, but theres no such thing like a free lunch.
What handshake and promises have been given for this exchange.

By the way, does anyone have a sense about how much land is in the hands of the local people in the Gambia? Can corporations purchase large parcels of land. Are there areas which are protected from land use and for conservation. I don't know if you ever read the story in India where a whole village of indigenous groups were relocated, because the goverment wanted to build a dam for electricity and the group which depended on the land for their livelihood was uprooted to
very poor property. In addition, they lost much of their "cosaan" traditional local knowledge... ?

Arundhati Roy names many similar cases in her book 'The Cost of Living', a lecture I strongly recommend. The German title is 'Die Politik der Macht'.
