there are a lot of theories of the burden of being black and female, why don't you read on it since you have a daughter. you deal with both racism and sexism. white women deal with only sexism. white males deal with nothing. black men deal only with racism.
also, we're are at the bottom of the pecking order, nobody protects us

obviously i don't let it keep me down, but others do, but knowing about yourself and your condition empowers you to know how to defend and educate others about your condition is, that's why i like knowing what's going on with me, education is really power.

I think that many Gambian women have lots of freedom in fact in some case more freedom than women in the west due to the extended family network. How many women can leave their immediate families and go to visit their mothers or sisters for weeks or months even in different regions or countries without worrying too much about childcare costs? How many women get the freedom even if they are married or divorced to have their children brought up by in-laws or share childcare? How many women can be married and own their own money are not obliged to share it with their husbands if they don't want too? How many countries have at least two or three women who are Ministers, and guess what this is all taking place in a prodominately Islamic country Gambia. The myth is African women have no rights the historical facts are African women have always had rights but some have forgotten how to use them.

sister omega you are right about that. I remember reading about tribe in Africa were women were the rulers. They picked their own husbands, run the villagers, made the trials. but most of that has been lost. African history shows powerful women leaders.

I agree Sister, to say african women don't have rights is a big mistake, but i've noticed in school that really the goal over hear is to highlight everything that's wrong with Africa, but however, when its america, its statements like "when other countries don't have the technology like we do" meanwhile, i'm just giving the teacher and everyone else dirty looks until i finally have to set them strianght. so maybe that's were the myth about submissive african women came from since the west can't to be behind africa in anything
