Babylon...lots of supposedly 'funny' comedians are racists. Comedy is actually rather serious. In Uk we seem to think it is ok for someone from a certain group to laugh at that groups expense...they are entitled to make the joke....eg an Irish comedian can do an irish joke, a muslim can joke about muslims .... a fat women about fat women....etc....I think this is true to some extent...but we need to be aware of the messages in humour......To have a joke at your own exense is ok.....but just be careful about reinforcing stereotypes.
What I really dont like about this poem is that implicit in it is that ONLY black women can be all these gutsy things....which is blatent rubbish and stereotypes ALL black women as strong and loud.
Sister Omega may be that type of black women, but not all black women are AND SOME white women are.
I suppose it depends how much you think about things; on the surface it is just a fun poem...makes you smile....... but underneath.....sterotypical and racist??????

Some people are just so politically correct and blow things out of all proportion!!!!! It really makes me so sad that people get criticised for having a bit of fun with a poem. Life is far too short to get stressed about things like this...chill out and have some fun!!! |

I am politically correct...is that a crime? I am a teacher, so daily we are on our guard. I have to be careful what I say to parents, what I write in reports etc.....
I do laugh at jokes... but many many jokes offend me. I prefer situational based comedy........it is nore subtle........
An awful lot of tradtional jokes are at the expense of women.....in working mens clubs by blue comedians.........(in UK) Personally I dont like the whole joke telling culture...it is usually anti someone. |

Sister i have to answer your question. I am a white woman who has lived in Africa. I now live in the UK in an area where being white puts me in the minority. So i have an idea what you are trying to say.
I think it was a wonderful morale booster, i just think if youd taken the BLACK word out of it every woman could of appreciated it. Instead of some feeling maybe you were saying that as a white woman we are not capable of these things.
Wether we be black or white we are still women, none of us are stupid so lets just think about what we are saying, i have the common sense to know if i said something like that about white women there would be a black woman who would be pissed at me. Its common sense guys. stop the seperation a woman is a woman and watever colour our skin is we may have experienced the same or similar things!
We could all do with the morale boost!

Hi Babylon I'm glad to see you have a sense of humour. It seems that some women suffer from a permenant state of PMT. I too like yourself also enjoy having a good laugh hearing Richard Pryor and Chris Rock jokes they make me laugh so hard. You know those real belly laugh to your eyes water Good to hear from you again Babylon.

Political correctness is a lot of bull**** when one utters one thing and means the exact opposite it's just hypocrisy. Molly75 and Babylon took the poem in the spirit it was offered within this cultural humour section with the onus on humour in the spirit it was offered. Babygirl in my intro i said that this poem was sent into my inbox from my sister and yes its a cultural joke but as you mentioned all women in general can relate to it. As you are probably aware that Lone Parents especially Black women bringing up their sons in the inner cities on council estates are normally accused by the medium of bringing up little gangster but what about those women who have struggled to bring up well mannered children who have gone on to university etc. I am one of them who have raised three children who have gone on to uni, and am in the process of raising my two remaining dependents. Now if I'd listened to what society had thought about me as a teenage mother I would not of educated myself and gone on and gained degree after having my fifth child. So I can relate to that poem.
Peace

Gambiabev it is a fact that we are all different.Just celebrate those differences and be proud of them. I totally get Sister Omegas lines, there is no racism intended, but you'd probably rather see the poor black woman who is so underpriviledged and incapable....... I admire black women, they are strong and beautiful
Big up Sister and be proud

babygirl what is the problem with you. forget about this petty talks. she wrote her peom for people to read and enjoy it,i am sure she is aware of the fact not everybody will like it. just imagine going to a book shop, you only buy books you like, that does not mean that the books you have not choose should not be publish. let the sleeping dog lies. |

abraham have i once said i have a problem?
You are saying that she is aware that not everyone will like it then surely she must accept that if you post something that you know will not be enjoyed by everyone that people are entitled to make their comments about your posting.
Whether the comments are negative or positive.
As for only buying a book you like, how do you know if you will like a book until you have read it? But surely once you have read the book you are entitled to comment on it? good or bad!

Reread the poem with the word white instead of black...many of the statements are still true.
Many circulars doing the rounds on the net are filled with such rubbish.......why not just delete them? I never pass them on...... and would never dream of putting them on bantaba.
I thought we were trying to have a higher level of debate!
I do agee that it's a classic streotype racist poem and a mockery by Sister Omega who is having a laugh rather than showing mutual respect in this forum. Its already triggered racism and degradation and certain disrespects which could be explosive if remain unchecked certain ways. Why "Black woman" repeated all the time? Remember "do unto others as you would wish them do unto to you" Also "if you are living in a glass house do't throw stones to others?" If "black woman" is edited and replaced by "White Woman" does the poem flow eloquently or "fit for purpose". No it does not, as the purpose of this poem is to degrade the "black woman" and blacks generally in certain respects.
There are lots of this kind aganst "the white woman" and even much more crude than this one. No one can challenge me that they haven't seen any racism connotation and the spirit of this poem? Am not impressed with your postings Sister Omega as you are fermenting "war of words"! and a dangerous game and nasty trick in this poem. Beware the devil in this poem!
STOP RACISM BEFORE IT GETS OUT OF HAND IN THIS FORUM. Of late Sister Omega you appear to be disoriented with your ideals and am loosing respect for your calibre and soberness. Stop the provocations! |
