Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame,
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
by Emma Lazarus, New York City, 1883

Thanks Dalton1,for the poem,I found this additional information that you might like to read.

http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/lazarus.html

Snippet:

"Give me your tired, your poor, / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," proclaims the "Mother of Exiles" in Emma Lazarus's sonnet "The New Colossus." Her best-known contribution to mainstream American literature and culture, the poem has contributed to the belief that America means opportunity and freedom for Jews, as well as for other "huddled masses." Through this celebration of the "other," Lazarus conveyed her deepest loyalty to the best of both America and Judaism.

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.

2bab,

Welcome back from holidaying in the Gambia.

Your link is very informative.

Truly a nice poem Emma wrote that ended up truly defining what America is all about. FYI, the debate or my reason for forward, is the GDP's letter to America, also at the G-L.
