FIVE UDP/NRP SUPORTERS CHARGED
By Yaya Dampha
After the Kombo East constituency by-election, the UDP candidate and six others were arrested by the Mandinaba Police. According to the Police, the seven were involved in a fight with the APRC supporters on Monday. The candidate, Mr. Lamin R. Darboe and another person were released unconditionally. However Mr. Dudu Kassa Jatta, Jerreh Fatty, Nato Conteh, Mai Jobarteh and M.S were charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, and released on bail.
When contacted for comments, the UDP candidate Lamin R. Darboe said he called the Police at Mandinaba when the APRC youths came to his compound gate throwing stones and hurling invectives. He said his sister and two other supporters were seriously wounded, noting that when the Police arrived, they arrested him and six of his supporters. Mr. Darboe said while at the Police Station in Mandinaba, the Police listened to both sides and released them, but SoS Yankuba Touray insulted him, and he also insulted him (SoS Touray). He said Yankuba Touray said he will close the Mandinaba Police Station if they are not charged.
He said they were later transferred to the Brikama Police Station where they spent the night. Dudu Kassa Jatta said even though they were assaulted and some of them sustained injuries, they were arrested and later charged. He said they are ready to contest the charge in court because they are law abiding citizens.
The APRC Mobiliser, Yankuba Touray confuted the claim that he urged the Police to charge the UDP sympathisers. SoS Touray said he never dictated the Police. He pointed out that the law provides for the arrest and charging of people who commit an offence. He said the Police were merely doing their work.
Asked how the problem started, SoS Touray said he was not present at the crime scene but noted that he was told that some of the UDP sympathisers who were involved in the brawl are from Brikama and other areas.
