Minister Says Education for All Remains Bleak By Lamin Njie
Fatou Lamin Faye, Minister of Basic and Secondary Education has said that the Education for All targets by 2015 remains bleak.
Minister Faye made these remarks on Monday 27th October 2010 at the opening of the recently concluded five- day sub-regional training workshop on education financing held at the Coco Ocean in Bijilo.
According to her, such chances are not quite representative of the situation in The Gambia, which may not be the best but provides some light at the end of the tunnel. This, she added is predicted on the current access and equity values which indicated the following increases; early childhood development enrolment increasing from 29,910 in 2000 to 62, 447 in 2010.
She revealed further that Lower Basic enrolment increased from 181, 835 in 2000 to 227, 668 in 2010 while Upper Basic enrolment increased from 41, 493 in 2000 to 75, 613 in 2010 among other issues.
"While attributable factors for such increases cannot be devoid of the political commitment and support from development partners in the provision of financial resources to the education sector, there is clear evidence that such support must increase in portfolio if we are to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) relative to education and the Education For All (EFA) targets by 2015," she said.
"Education for All is therefore more urgent than ever before and I applaud the contribution of the Education for All Campaign Network with its partners and associates for the sustained effort in leading such campaigns," she said.
The objective of the five-day workshop was to build the capacity of participants to undertake key issues relating to financing education in their respective countries. The workshop also aims at developing a national campaign on education financing, tailored to the national context that builds on existing initiatives.
It is also poised to align the national campaign on education financing with specific opportunities and demands of the campaign activities in 2010 and to enable colleagues from neigbouring countries to leave with confidence and clarity to run effectively their own national workshops. Participants were drawn from Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia.
