The West African Examination Council (WAEC) The Gambia Office has withheld the recently conducted Gambia Basic Examination Certificate Examination (GABECE) results of Kombo Kerewan Upper Basic School, the Daily Observer can reveal.

According to sources, the development came in the wake of suspicions by the exam council officials that the school might have engaged itself in some examination malpractice because of the extra-quality performance of its students in some of the subjects particularly French.Up to the time of going to press, there was no sign of the results being immediately released by the examination body and the fate of the affected students remains uncertain. This reporter visited the school on Tuesday to find out how the school authority is coping with the situation.

John Gomez, the principal who seemed reluctant to talk when he was approached, confirmed the story. He told the Daily Observer that he received information from WAEC that his school's results cannot be released because of examination malpractice. He further revealed that all the students who sat to the Grade 9 exams are affected but said he doesn't know the actual number of students involved.

When asked as to what his reaction was when he received the information, the principal said: "What do you think my reaction should be?" Gomez also failed to explain what he is currently doing to secure the immediate release of the results, and declined to comment on the allegations of exam mal-practices levied against his school.

When contacted to shed light on the issue, Abdourahman Ceesay, the acting head of the WAEC national office who was on his way to Basse said that issues concerning results cannot be discussed over the phone. He quickly added that such issues are between the council and the schools and advised this reporter to go to the affected school to find out the details.

Daily Observer will keep readers updated about new developments in the matter as they unfold.
