Gambia U17 Defeat Morocco
By Alhagie Panneh

Following their defeat two weeks ago The Gambia under 17 hunted down Morocco in the return leg of the Under 17 Cadet African championships on Saturday to a comfortable 3-1 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau amid low key fans turnout and heavy down pour.

It could be recalled that Morocco defeated the darling Scorpions two weeks ago by a lone goal inside Morocco in a hash and a very dry climate around 10pm during the Ramadan.

Three goals to one, courtesy of the Gambia’s eminent player Buba Jallow alias Melles, who listed his name twice in the score sheet. He shook the Moroccan net from a penalty kick when the Moroccan defender brought down striker Saloum Faal inside the 18 yard in the 36 minutes of the first half. Buba sealed victory for The Gambia in the 76th minute of the match when he powerfully hit a 25-yard range ball into the net.

Gambia succumbed to an own goal through the second goal scorer Bakary Bunja Sanyang in the 66 minutes of the game that gave Morocco their accidental lone goal. Gambia could have added many goals to the score board but the muddiness of the pitch by the heavy downpour on that day could not let them transform their chances into goals.

The match was well contested by both teams showing their refusal of exiting the qualifiers. The Moroccans unfortunately went home with tears on their cheeks after losing several chances and continued their fortune hunting up to the Gambian pitch but all resulted in faded hopes when Melles close the scoring during the eleventh hour of the match.

Yusupha O.M. Njie the son of the former Gambian legend Biri Njie, Fabakary Bojang and Bakary Bunja Sanyang all missed dead chances for the Gambia while the man of the match back in Morocco Hamza has been left behind due to illness.

Speaking to The Daily News, the Moroccan head coach, Robert Sibichi said The Gambian team was the master of the game and they prepared for it and commended Melles for the brilliant strike.

On his part, the head coach of The Gambia Lamin Sambou expressed happiness for the good work the boys have done. He said the match didn’t work well for them in the initial stage, but upon realizing this he had to substitute Habibou Koroma and Hamang Conteh which paid dividend.

The Gambian coach went on saying, "helping these young stars is no extravagance, because they are well determined and ready to deliver." He assured their supporters that they will qualify. He went further to say that despite the poor condition of the pitch the boys insisted that they will play, stating that it is Nawettan.

Melles told this reporter that he is proud of registering two goals for his side. He said in Morocco their chances were not transformed into goals but things worked well at home. He commended their darling supporters for their wonderful support that injected doses of courage in them.
