Primary education isnt totally free. People have to pay for uniform, pens, pencils and paper, books, lunch etc...
Any visitors to Gambia, if you take pencils and exercise books this will give access to primary education for more children. Take it to a village school.
In Kolior there was a separate Islamic school, but now the schools have combined.
MANY children ( between half and two thirds) still don't go to school in Kolior.
Well then there is nothing totally free. There is no school fees in primary school in 1975/76, and free or greatly subsidized lunch is provided. It is reasonale that people will have to buy certain things for themselves. Exercise books and uniforms are not outside the reach of most parents. That is why you hardly see any finacially related dropouts in primary school. Most of the dropouts due to money occurs in secondary and high schools, and it is all attributed to school fees... |
