Ramadan 1431 will start on August 11st. 2010, Insha'Allah. Only 28 Days remaining. Today Hijri date is 2nd day of Shabaan 1431; so if you have to make-up for any missed days from Ramadan 1430, now's the best time to do so. Stay tuned for more updates...

With the approach of the month of Ramadan, the Muslim is supposed to start a new leaf with Allah, his fellow human beings as well as all his surroundings. On this new leaf, he should first declare sincere repentance from all sins committed in order for him to be eligible for Allah's reward in the blessed month of Ramadan.

Making up any missed fasts from last Ramadan:“...and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Sawm (fasts) must be made up] from other days...” [The Qur'an 2:185] - The time for making up the fasts lasts until the next Ramadan begins; he/she can make them up at any time during this period, on consecutive days or separately.

The likeness of the month of Rajab is that of the wind, the likeness of Sha’baan is that of the clouds and the likeness of Ramadaan is that of the rain; whoever does not plant and sow in Rajab, and does not irrigate in Sha’baan, how can he reap in Ramadaan?" (Said by Abu Bakr al-Balkhi)

My childhood years and ramadan. Most I remember, going to the bakery and buy freshly baked pita (Only made during ramadan) bread with sesame seeds, would smell delicious. It was painful to wait until the 'break-fast'. Than the feast my mother prepares, we always had olives, date and dried figs on the table. But after 13 rakah, 20 rakah terrawi were always very tiring after the feast. Come on Imam, read the Fatiha faster!!!!

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

Turk, sorry for the late response. From what I could remember, my parents and siblings were in line with the Sunnah of our Noble Prophet (PBUH) by breaking their fast with fresh dates - but I have always singled out my Vimto to break my fast.

Regarding the food, "plasas" was my favorite and up to today, is still my favorite African dish. Praying Maghrib was not a challenge to me - Isha'a and Taraweeh combined was difficult for me after having stuffed all the delicious food prepared.

That which invalidates the fast:

1) Sexual intercourse:Whenever the fasting person has sexual intercourse, his fast is invalidated. Subsequently, he is required to make up the fast for that day in which he had sexual intercourse in addition to paying a penalty (kaffaarah) which is to free a slave. If he is unable to find a slave or funds that are equal to that, then he is required to fast consecutively for two months. If he is unable to fast for two months, due to an Islaamically acceptable reason, he is to feed 60 poor people half a saa' each from the food common in that land.

2) Excretion of semen as a result of kissing, touching with desire, masturbation or persistently looking at that which arouses the desire. In this case, the fast is invalidated and he is required to make up for that day without paying a penalty (kaffaarah), since paying a penalty is specific to having had sexual intercourse.

3) Intentionally eating and drinking, due to that which Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala) says:

{...and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your Sawm (fast) till the nightfall}, [Soorah al-Baqarah, Aayah 187]

As for he who eats and drinks out of forgetfulness, then this does not affect his fast as is mentioned in the following hadeeth:

(Whoever forgetfully eats or drinks, then he should complete his fast, for indeed it was Allaah who provided him the food and drink)

And from that which breaks the fast is water and other such substances to pass his throat via his nose. This is known as as-Sa'oof. Likewise, taking a nutritional injection directly into the vein and taking a blood transfusion whilst fasting. All of these invalidate the fast, as it constitutes nutrition for the body.

As regards a non-nutritional injection, then it is better for one who is fasting to avoid this so as to protect his fast. The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) said:

Leave that which you are doubtful (about) for that which are not doubtful (about)

And as such delay it until after having broken the fast at the time of Maghrib.

4) As for extracting blood via cupping or opening a vein or donating blood for medical reasons, then all of this invalidates the fast. As regards giving a small blood sample for testing purposes, then this does not affect the fast. Likewise, this applies to the unintentional flow of blood resulting from a nose bleed, injury or having a tooth removed. All of these do not affect the fast.

5) Intentional vomiting also invalidates the fast. However, the fast is not affected if he is overcome and is forced to vomit without intending so. This is based upon the statement of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam):

Whoever is overcome (and forced) to vomit, then he is not required to make up (the fast for that day) and whoever intentionally vomits then he must make up (the fast for that day.

The fasting person should not exert himself whilst gargling and sniffing water up his nose (when making wudhoo.) because it is quite possible the water may pass his throat and thereby enter his stomach. The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) said:

Whilst making wudhoo.) exert yourself in sniffing water up the nose except if you are fasting.

Using the miswaak (tooth-stick) does not affect the fast, rather it is recommended, whether fasting or not, throughout the day.

His fast is not affected if any dust or even a fly was to reach his throat.

It is obligatory for the fasting person to refrain from lying, backbiting and swearing, even if someone was to swear at him. If this is the case, he should say:

(indeed), I am fasting

Certainly, some people find it easy to abstain from food and drink but find it difficult to abandon that which has become a habit for them from evil speech and actions. This is why some of the Pious Predecessors have said:

The easiest (type of) fast is abstaining from food and drink.

So it is upon the Muslim to fear Allaah and be aware of Him and His Greatness and the fact that He Sees all that we do, such that absolutely nothing remains hidden from him. In doing this, he should protect his fast from all that invalidates it or reduces it's reward so that his fast remains correct and, inshaa.-Allaah, is accepted by Allaah.

It is befitting for the fasting person to busy himself in the remembrance of Allaah, reciting the Qur.aan and increasing in the performance of naafilah (voluntary) prayers.

It used to be that when the Pious Predecessors would fast, they would sit in the masaajid and they would say:

We shall protect our fast and not backbite anyone.

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) said:

Whoever does not abandon evil speech and actions, then Allaah is not in need of him having left his food and drink (i.e. fasting).

This is because seeking nearness to Allaah is not complete simply by leaving our personal desires (of eating and drinking, etc). Rather, it is by leaving that which Allaah has prohibited at all times in terms of lying, oppression and the like. In a narration, Abu Hurayrah said:

The fast is accepted as worship so long as no Muslim has been backbitten or harmed.

And it is narrated by Anas, who said:

The one who has backbitten the people whilst fasting has not really fasted.

I used modern technology to find prayer times during my stay in Greenland specially above the arctic circle where you have 24 hours sun during summer months and months without the sun during the winter.

You know, Jawara would have gone by now on annual vacation to U.K. Did you guys recall that Sir Dawda almost never spent this month (Ramadan) in the Gambia? It always 'coincided' with his annual vacation. I am not accusing anything okay, its just the British weather more conducive for fasting. That's all .
Even myself if were living in the U.K., I would fast the whole month. But too bad U.S. weather is so different...

Kay, Bayil tounge.

What are the virtues of the month of Ramadan?

The following virtues are affixed with the month of Ramadan.
1. The devils are chained.
2. The gates to paradise are opened and the gates to hellfire are locked.
3. The Angels seek Allah’s forgiveness for the fasting person until he/she breaks their fast.
4. The (bad) breath of the one who is fasting is better in the sight of Allah on the day of Resurrection than the smell of musk.
5. There is a night during this month which is better than a thousand months. (The night of power or Shab-e-Qadr).
6. Allah forgives many people during this month who were condemned to hell fire due to their previous grave sins and this act of forgiveness is repeated during each night of Ramadan.

When is the “Gate of Al-Rayyan” opened during Ramadan and what is its significance?

Muslims who fast have been promised a great reward by Allah Almighty. As, the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “In Paradise there is a gate called al-Rayyaan, through which those who used to fast will enter on the Day of Resurrection, and no one but they will enter it. It will be said, ‘Where are those who fasted?’ They will get up, and none will enter it but them. When they have entered, it will be locked, and no one else will enter.” (Al-Bukhaari, 1763; Muslim, 1947).

It is known that Paradise has many gates, because Allah says: “‘Adn (Eden) Paradise (everlasting Gardens), which they shall enter and (Also) those who acted righteously from among their fathers, and their wives, and their offspring. And angels shall enter unto them from every gate” [al-Ra’d 13:23]

“And those who kept their duty to their Lord (Al-Muttaqoon – the pious) will be led to Paradise in groups till when they reach it, and its gates will be opened (before their arrival for their reception) and its keepers will say: Salaamu ‘Alaykum (peace be upon you)! You have done well, so enter here to abide therein” [al-Zumar 39:73]

Is it permissible to go to the dentist while fasting?

Most dental actions do not affect the validity of the fast and furthermore this is allowed as long as no blood or medicine is swallowed. Similarly, if an injection which is not intended for nourishment does not affect the validity of the fast.

Which is better during the day in Ramadan – reading the Quran or praying voluntary prayers?

Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) used to perform lot of prayers and worships of different kind in the month of Ramadan. The arch angle Jibrael used to review Quran with him at night. He was generous in giving people charity and treating people more kindly. He would pray more, give more, and read Quran more. This depends on people’s circumstances and its evaluation is up to Allah.

When it comes to the number of rakat to be prayed in Taraweeh, which is right- eight or 20 rakats?

It was the practice of Prophet Muhammad to pray eight rakat and in fact, he never exceeded this amount during his lifetime. Aishah (R) said,”Whether it was Ramadan or any other month, Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not pray more than eleven rakat.” (Bukhari and Muslim) (i.e. 8 rakat of Taraweeh’ and then 3 rakat of Witr.)

When it comes to Prayers, quality is very important and we should not think because we do not pray 20 rakat of Taraweeh’ that we are not getting as much reward. In fact, following the Sunnah of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) will yield more reward, until the Imam finishes praying Witr.
