WAEC Goes on Line By Kebba Camara 12-03-10
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) yesterday launched what they call online registration and result checking at its headquarters in Banjul.
Speaking at the launching ceremony Mr. Felix Okaroa, the head of National Office of WAEC ,said it is important to improve the services of WAEC so that all Member Countries of the Council can embrace the ICT mode of operations and redefine the way they do almost everything. He said the launching of ICT by the Banjul Office goes further to prove that WAEC’s responsibilities extend beyond just preparing candidates for examination but also guide the students towards an enviable successful outing. He continued to say that the Council is very much aware of the mad chase for paper qualification which invariably leads to the adoption of fair and foul means for which WAEC has been unjustly blamed. He finally thanked all those who made the launching a dream come true. “I sincerely appeal to the gathering to help us spread the good news and assist us in ensuring that the programme which other WAEC Member Countries ( Ghana , Nigeria , Sierra Leone and Liberia ) adopted long ago succeeds in the Gambia “ he concludes. Also speaking at the ceremony, Mr Baboucarr Boye, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education said this new initiative by WAEC marks another milestone in the history of WAEC in the Gambia in its quest for excellence in education. He said in August 2004, the Banjul office of WAEC signed an agreement with FLEET Technologies limited for the provision of direct access to online information services for a period of ten years. He noted that the system involves four types of interfaces between the online examination registration system and the intended users made up of schools, parents, Ministry of education and other stakeholders. He identified the interfaces as follows: (a) Online Web interface for registration of candidates who intend to write examination online. (b) Online web interface for council officials for the administration of examinations. (c) Offline windows interface for registering students or candidates in schools or locations where there is no internet access. (d) Offline windows interface for downloading and integration of registration data.
“It will also serve as additional sources of revenue generation for WAEC business centres and all internet cafés in the Gambia . It is a basic fact that information technology has touched almost every aspect of our lives in a bid to improve and provide a more effective way of doing things”. Speaking on behalf of FLEET Technologies Kunle Ajinnirad told the gathering that Fleet technologies is a full fledge information and communication technology company in Nigeria and that it commenced operation in 2003, He said they have been opportune to build a business relation with WAEC in the area of website design and hosting, a scratch card based on online result checking product for candidates. He added that they also had the opportunity of working closely with Ghana in 2004 and had collaborated and deployed an internet base solution for providing the results checker solutions, results verification solutions and candidate registration solutions. He said, in the same vein, that the online result checker solutions and candidate solutions were launched by WAEC Sierra Leone in 2008 and it covers all available examinations conducted and managed by WAEC.
