hello everyone, how is the day. I need some help. I am in touch with a student who wants to study either engineering or computers (IT maintenance). I asked the costs not much between either of them, about 500 dls. But then i asked what does the futher hold. In UK I would be loathed to advise a student to spend time and money on a subject if the futher job market does not look good. My question, what does the future job market hold for a student of computers or engineering, will they get a job?

Of course they will. Jambo it seems you've caught the pessemist bug of the downturn. However I think your contact has discovered a niche for him/herself in Gambia IT market. Just ask yourself the question what do you do in the UK if your computer breaks down? Answer: Call a Computer Engineer.
It's so simple but often we overlook the obvious until our computer breaks down. It's good to see your friend using their initiative to think outside of the box of dependency and adopting an I can do attitude. Jambo are you sceptical about sending them the money to buy the books? If so you could always order them some books from Amazon or ask them to google it.
Peace

GTTI do some very good courses concerning computer software - much more advanced than some of the "little" colleges offering courses on computers for a cheap price. GTTI offer good, recognised qualifications with (in my experience) excellent staff. The cost ranges from 5000 - 7500 per year (depending on course). With these courses the future is bright but they need reasonably good qualifications to get on to the course. The 'cheap' courses are fine if they just want to learn how to use e mail or access the internet. GTTI also does good engineering courses - I have a student who finished last year - spent 3 years there and did very well. He has not yet found a job in engineering but am still hopeful he will. He's sent his papers and been for iinterviews in lots of places from the port to a new (sweet???) factory. Unfortunately he doesn't have any contacts - and I don't know anyone in The Gambia who might need an engineer who can make tools, lathes etc. Does anyone???!! |

THANK YOU, i suppose i had looked at it from a UK point of view, if he trains in computers in gambia he will be one(or more steps up the ladder). the money is not the problem, I have sent money via western union before. i think it started when I wanted to sponsore someone in the tourism industry and that became too many qualified people not enough jobs. he is thinking about Quantam, but I have looked at GTTI and will recommend that one. The books i will find a way to get them there. Lily your comment about the engineering course struck a chord all that money and no job. sometimes they are better off studying shrothand and typing or commercial course such as booking keeping. COMPUTERS IT IS, I am thinking positive that GTTI is not over subscribed, It seems to be about 5,000 dls, £125.00 which I can manage, used 40 dls to £1.00 but does anyone have another place to suggestion. Jollof tutors. Turk, i think more of the engineering side, but I am only going for the basic course, possible certificate or dipolma level. It is a step up the ladder, anything else he will have to supply. THANK YOU.
