Youths call for Faculty of Architecture YOUITH PLATFORM with Alieu Darboe
As part of their drive to create employment for young people and promote their welfare, the membership of Youth Empowerment Project AFRICA) and their Gambian counterparts has called for the establishment of an architectural design unit as a necessity within the Project.
The Faculty of Architecture at the Eindohoven University of Technology offers design projects to students under the supervision of professors and architects. Subjects include a big variety of possibilities, which often deal with topical matters. The co-founder Paul Engelsman noted that most projects seem to inter-relate with questions of daily life while they remain to be fiction.
"Plans are rarely exposed in the publicity. Not to mention that they are not executed, he said. Mr.Engelsman noted that the supervisor, Mr. Jan Schevers launched an innovative and inspiring concept in reaction to the change in the regulations concerning the registration of architects in the BNA (Dutch Federation of Architects). Now at least two years of work experience is required on top of graduation.
The essence of this project focuses on all sorts of aspects architects deal with in their day-to-day work. This can diverge from keeping in touch with the client, to carrying out products and personal vision/ambition in a persuasive and professional way. Altogether, of course, analogues to the development of a powerful design for the young people!
He said during their first meeting, Jan Schevers introduced the YEP AFRICA Project. The Foundation puts all efforts in suppressing unemployment among the youth in Africa. "After all, they are the vast majority inhabitants of this continent and therefore need to be brought in the position of creating their own future. With this philosophy they stand as ‘pioneers’ at the beginning of a change which can constitute a movement on macro scale", he said.
Creating And Supporting The Enabling Conditions Under Which Young People Can Act On Their Own Behalf, And On Their Terms, Rather Than At The Direction Of Others - (YEP FOUNDATION)
The youth is encouraged to develop and expand their inner power which they earlier did not discover. With the help of workshops, the youth is guided in a creative process and will learn how to "create out of nothing.’ Art is used to start a process of personal development and stimulates the youth to create their possibilities and opportunities in life. In a different way, they learn about self-confidence, presentation, self respect and inner power. They will come to a personal commitment, statement and action plan.
Meanwhile 53 young people in The Gambia are occupied and participating in a network in which transferring knowledge is of great importance. By various activities they empower another #3000 people and together they developed a business plan concerning the concept ‘Entrepreneurs-Under One-Roof. This Youth-Enterprise-Palace, as they call it, is meant to house all Entrepreneurs Under-One –Roof.
A building that offers these young people a solid foundation for their company through the use of common facilities, such as water, electricity and collective rooms; and through collaboration as part of the commitment they have, to keep the Youth-Enterprise-Palace in a healthy state. Thriving companies will make place for new companies because they see more possibilities elsewhere. At the same time, companies have a maximum period (for instance five years) to use this stage; thus raising a survival of the fittest.
