Foroyaa Editorial : Where is the Free Education For Girls? One Girl found a School; the other still waiting for sponsors

By Publisher on 05-02-10

Sometime ago Foroyaa reported on the situation of two girls who were having difficulty with finances in their drive to continue their educational career. One of them is in grade 12 and would not sit her exams if she fails to pay her school and exam fees within the next two weeks. The other one chose Charles Jow but could not attend the first term because of financial difficulties. When part of the payment was available for the second term for her to begin, place was not available. Her grades are excellent and she could become an outstanding student. Fortunately Muslim Senior Secondary School did give her a place and save her from being a school drop out because of poverty. Poverty and not the sky would have been the limit for her educational pursuit.

When she appeared at the Foroyaa Office with a polythene bag full of books she wore a smile that could light up the heart of any human being who has one that could feel the suffering and despair of others. She was simply told that the way to repay generosity is to exert determination to succeed. She has started grade 10.Will she get sponsorship for grade 11 and twelve? That is hanging on the balance of probability.

The situation of the grade 12 girl who is attending Aji Ndahteh Senior Secondary School is yet to be addressed. If no sponsor emerged within the next two weeks we will have no option but to refer her to the Minister of Basic Education for her to look for sponsorship for the girl instead of leaving her to dropout because of poverty. We hope we will not be told that Aji Ndahteh Senior Secondary School is a private school.

Our response would then be swift. We will then issue a reminder regarding what the government has said to the nation just two years ago. According the Government, private –Public partnerships are well established in Senior Secondary Schools’ provision, with more than 88 percent of Senior Secondary Schooling provided by either subsidized(41 percent) or non subsidized (46 percent) private school.

The open secret is that 88 percent of Senior Secondary School education is provided by Private Schools. Where then is the free education for girls? At least attempt should be made to identify the most disadvantaged girls and give them support so that they will not be school drop outs.
