Suntu, don't back off. I look forward to yours and my Tooma's translation.

I have just added the meaning of Timpo above with a photo of the animal for those who are interested to know.

By the way, perhaps Jali Musa is responding to both this topic and and the one you started "A difficult comparison Foday M Suso And Jaliba" at: http://www.gambia.dk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8661

Momodou, thanks
For getting us the picture of timpoo, I have never seen it with my eyes in nature.

It would be of great interest if Foday Musa or anyone else can enlighten us; what Jookaa means, is it Mandingka or is it a borrowed word.

To say jookaa originated from Kabou reminds me of the disagreement surrounding the origin of the kora.
Even whereas I agree that it is very difficult to translate from one language to another even if both are written languages much more in this case where English is written whiles Mandingka is spoken, not written. Therefore the difference between the kabounka and the Gambian Mandingkas is insignificant as to if jookaa could be translated to English or not.

Suntou, as a Mandingka with a personal experience of Mandingka culture makes you more trustworthy than any ethnomusicologists as far as understanding the culture. Do not give up your project that easy, concentrate on interpretation and not translation it would make your task much easier.

Even whereas Foday Musa has the copyright of his material, he is not claiming to be the composer; jookaa falls in the category of tradition. Foday Musa did a great job in bringing back a fading cultural phenomenon to life and also adding some modern spices to it which took it from the Balingo to the Disco, that is phenomenal.
Foday, count me in your fan list

Thanks Momodou, i thought Foday may have got the wrong conclusion over me and gainde's quest.
We know it is going to be difficult writing down the song in words, but have task ourselves with it. Him being a Wollof make it very rewarding. Harmony is our diversity is what all need to promote. We will do our best to write the song down first and then translate with help of Janko hopefully.
Thanks Janko for the kind words, time is limited, hence the slow process.

Thanks momodou for bringing the finish product to our attention. extend our gratitude to FM Suso. This is a blue print now, myself and Gainde can relax and try to find the equivalent words in English.

Janko.for us who cannot speak your signature appears approperate to this topic:

OK, substitute written for spoken !

toubab1020, thanks

Well, here is a kind of trans- interpretation, a combination of translation and interpretation, hence Mandingka is not written and secondly the text is singing/chanting, which as you know, takes a different pronunciation than when spoken.

Here is my try on the lines in my quotation from Foday Musa´s, Jokaa (a chanting/singing style)

34) emaje jooka lemu kampuranti esa finja koma nin nyato

I can now appriciate how difficult it must be to formulate a meaning translatable into English words,it is really a daunting task, I had not realised the complexities before, your collaborative translation efforts when complete will be a first I see that now.
