Who is responsible for this attack? Is Tongo particularly targeted or could it be any of the teams?
Is a game of football worth loss of life? Should the tornament be cancelled? On the other hand is that exactly what the attackers want to happen? It's a difficult one.
Very sad for the individuals involved and their families. I hope the survivors make a full recovery from what they have seen. The emotional effects may effect them long term. I hope not. |

These are indeed shockingly tragic events to occur on the eve of the African Cup. It is a sad situation for the games and my heartfelt sympathises go out to the family of the victims.
I just hope that Angola Security can be tightened up enough to ensure the safety of the rest of the teams still in Angola and that they call in additional security from AU if necessary to allow the games to continue. However Health & Safety of the participants and supporters is paramount and if the Angolan Authorities cannot give meet the task of fulfilling its security arrangements then the games in my opinion should be prosponed to later in the year to another venue if possible.

A number of separatist groups are demanding independence for Cabinda, a province of Angola separated from the rest of the country by a thin strip of the Democratic Republic of Congo. About one dozen organisations, three of them armed, are believed to be operating in the enclave, according to the GlobalSecurity.org website.
A group fighting for the independence of the oil-rich region, which is divided from the rest of Angola by Democratic Republic of Congo, claimed responsibility for the attack on Friday, saying it was aimed at the team's military escorts.
Rodrigues Mingas, the secretary-general of The Forces for the Liberation of the State of Cabinda-Military Position (Flec-PM) said the group would continue its attacks against Angolan targets.
"This attack wasn't against the Togolese it was against the Angolan occupation forces. We have nothing against Togo. We are supporting and admire their players a great deal," he told Al Jazeera from Luxembourg. ............ http://english.aljazeera.net/sport/2010/01/201011012928968802.html |

Thanks for explaining that.
What is to be gained by Angola hanging on to this little separate piece of land?
Does Congo claim it, or is it trying to be completely independent? |

Click on the map above and read more about the Profile of Cabinda separatists.
"Cabinda is important to the Angolan economy, with oilfields off its coast estimated to account for about 60 per cent of the country's output. However, many Cabindans complain that the oil wealth fails to find its way back to the people."

Well it seems that the Angola has taken measures to secure Cabinda for therest of the games. Hopefully the football matches scheduled in the city can go ahead. This separatist movement hit the Togolese squad who were riding in a yellow bus clearly marked TOGO therefore Rodrigues Mingas is talking complete nonesense when he that their attack was not against Togolese but Angolan Occupation Force. Then to add insult to injury to the Togolese squad how the murderers of the Togolese team support them. This is a provocative statement to say the least. What hyprocritical nonsense,If Angola was their target then why did FLEC-PM intentionally attack the Togolese squad?
Bev,many African states were demarked during colonial times therefore when they became independent the boundaries of souvreignity were already mapped out. I would persume as Angola has not too long ago come out of a 25 year Civil war and DRC is currently holding a Ceasefire since being embroiled in unrest since the early 90's. There is still instability surrounding these countries borders, which need to be resolved and as we've glimpsed high profile events tend to be opportunist targets for such groups to launch attacks thus raising the profile of their cause. It's just unnecessary for innocent people coming with the intention of playing soccer in he spirit of friendship co-operation peace and with the spirit of the African Cup in mind to represent their countries in this competition fell victim to a bunch of cowards.

I thought that the civil war was buried with Jonas Savimbi. Rodrigues Mingas should be arrested in Luxembourg and tried for this terrorist act against the whole of Africa. They are definitely a bunch of cowards Sister O. |

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |
