Gambia Stun nation Cup Host
By Sulayman Bah

04-01-10

The Senior Scorpions held CAF nation’s cup host Angola to a stunning 1-1 draw, in a friendly test yesterday in Portuguese capital of Lisbon .
The Scorpions stole the show as early as in the 5th minute of the First-half through Sandefjord’s unlikely scorer, Ebrima Sohna. The midfielder out jumped his marker at the edge of the penalty box to head in the ball that beat goalkeeper Carlos Fernandez to the right bottom corner of the net.

The Scorpions continued to dominate proceedings half way to the end of the first-half until when ex-Manchester United goal poacher Manucho surged his way in to the Gambian box forcing in his left foot between right-back Abdou Njie and defender Abdou Jammeh to put the ball beyond Pa Dembo Touray’s reach in the 36th minute. The black Antelope’s goal fuelled more attacking threats on the Gambians, forcing them to a defensive tactics.
Again the Angolans piled pressure as they caused problems on the Gambian back-four. Mustapha-Toubabo Jarju sliced a pass to Sanna Nyassi who down the wing made an own run before unleashing a grounded shot at the Angolan goalkeeper. But Fernandez reacted well. The nation’s cup host should have double the lead when Flavio rounded up Gambia Ports Authority’s Abdou Njie before spacing up for a shot. But SK Lierse defender Abdou Jammeh intercepted his goal bound shot with Ebrima Sohna clearing it to safety as the Angolans led the Gambians on ball possession.
Tijan Jaiteh’s tap a pass that found Ousman Jallow who stretched the ball to Ebrima Sawaneh. Sawaneh forced in the Angolan box having only the goalkeeper to beat, the striker chipped the ball over the cross and that chance was Gambia ’s closest opportunity in front of goal in the 38th minute.
Revolution’s Abdoulie Ken Mansally had to be substituted out for Landskrona’s Alagie Sosseh, for a rough tackle he made on Leeds United Rui Marques and had to be booked.
The Angolans didn’t rest on their laurels for a goal either, as new entrant Ze Kalanga shoots trouble for the Gambian defense. Ze Kalanga dribbled Ebrima Sohna but was intercepted with by Ibrahima Sawaneh and the referee called for a fouled. It seems danger was imminent when Ze Kalanga’s free-kick almost cost captain Pa Dembo Touray goalkeeping problems. Pa Dembo’s punch to- safety was recollected again Love fired the rebound, but his shot went off target.
