Dubai, the second largest of the seven states of the United Arab Emirate (UAE) is recently in the spotlight for its financial troubles. Dubai's government-owned 'Dubai World' is reported to have declared its inability to continue paying down its excruciating debt. This declaration has sent panic throughout the global financial markests, especially the Asian markets. Dubai, a little known state until recently when it started making a small fortune by drilling offshore oil, has since neglected oil trade for tourism, real estate, and financial services. Dubai's outlandish projects to build a "City State" has put it under excruciating debt that could threaten its very survival as investors, creditors, and tourists are scared away by its impending economic and financial crash and its repercussion around the region. While it is too early to determine the future of Dubai and its surrounding, others like the Gambia's Jammeh government, which aspires to build a "City State" modeled on Dubai, should learn early warning lessons from the experience of Dubai. Development is not just about outlandish construction!

| You never miss an opportunity to slap Gambia in the face. Why would we want to build a "city state" within when we are a sovereign and independent nation. It doesn't just make sense. I think economic hegemons should be learning if any form Dubai not an already impoverished Gambia with virtually no known or proven resources to even aspire to be a Dubai. |

Hey Mansasulu, transforming the Gambia into a "city state"doesn't make sense to me either. But that is what Jammeh, APRC, and the Daily Observer keeps saying. I just used their exact words. Please see below:
1. “She went on to remind the gathering of the president's numerous development undertakings, and his expressed intention to turn Gambia into a city state. VP Njie-Saidy went further to highlight the achievements of the president in the treatment”, Daily Observer quoting VP Isatou Njie Saidy at Kombo North’s celebration of Jammeh’s professorship. (Jan. 18, 2009).
2. “Your Excellency, you have indeed transformed the country into a city state and I am confident to say that your dreams …”, Daily Observer; July 3, 2009.
3. “With the aid of God, The Gambia is going to be a model for Africa. ... made: to turn Gambia into a city state will be achieve in short term”. ..., (Daily Observer; November 17, 2009)
4. The release stated that it is an onus for every Gambian to contribute their ... of The Gambia, in transforming The Gambia into a city-state. ...,( Daily Observer; March 3, 2009).
5. “... and the ongoing transformation of The Gambia to a city state, in accordance with ...”, Daily Observer; Sept. 17, 2009.

| Perhaps they like the term "city state," without actually know what it is. On a light note, a friend of my dad liked the word "actually" so much people started calling him by that. |
