Another Lunatic ‘Kills Mum’ By Saikou Jammeh
A 40-year-old woman believed to be a lunatic has allegedly caused the death of her mother Mama Suwareh, 60, last Friday in Baddibu Suwareh Kunda, North Bank Region, a source very close to the family revealed to The Daily News.
Fatoumata Sano, a resident of the said village hit her mum twice on the head with a stool on Thursday evening, a police source confirmed.
As a result, the old woman was seriously injured on the head, and the matter was reported to Kerewan police station before the victim was rushed to the Farrafenni Healh Centre and finally to the RVTH, the police PRO said. She was in a state of coma for three days, and kicked the bucket last Friday and buried on Sunday.
Killing by lunatics has now become common place in our society as this is the third time in three consecutive weeks, prompting the police to send an alarm that there are more aggressive lunatics in the streets capable of killing more people. This warning by the police came after a woman, 52, was killed in Jambur, by one Sulayman Ceesay who is also suspected to be a madman. His victim’s body was found in the bush with her head cut-off and part of her hand skinned and taken away, local media reported.
Infact the killing of the old woman came just a week after another watchman was killed by a man, also suspected to be a lunatic. The old man too was going home having retired from work at the wee hours in Kanifing when he was attacked and hit on the head with metal rod by his attacker.
In this recent incident in Baddibu, our source said the old woman was sleeping when the lunatic daughter came behind her with a stool and hit her twice on the head, before she could be rescued, which in fact came late. The matter was expected to be heard last Thursday at Kerewan Magistrates’ Court.
The old woman is survived by 7 children, 4 males and three females, all grown-ups.

Hi Mawdo Momodou,
This is another sad case.
May the soul of the deceased rest in perfect case. Amen!
It is certainly a lunatic woman who is capable of the description above.

This is evil. How could someone kill their own mother. Absolutely dreadful. May she rest in peace. This woman if found guilty beyond doubt should be severely punished for her wicked act. It is sickening to hear babarrians like these walking the streets.

This trashy article is appauling crude and ignorant reporting if you can call it that. The Report seems to be opinionated without having any real insight into Mental Health. He is just vocalising his biased limited understanding of Mental Health issues which is counterproductive for people in the community struggling without proper Mental Health support within the community. How can Saikou Jammeh write such a report without getting some opinions from witnesses to get further clarity about these cases. If the victim's daughter was Mentally ill as the Reporter implies then isn't it more responsible for Saikou to bring up some more thought provoking questions about this tragic incident as several lives have been destroyed by this brutal incident. Instead of spewing prejudice and placing sigmatisms on Mental illness.

Sister I agree that the article needs a little tidy up, phrases like "kicked the bucket last Friday and buried on Sunday." should have been "retouched" by the editor, the reporter is obviously inexperienced, and failed to understand the effect that the phrase might have on family and friends of the dead woman. A strong and serious look at Mental health in Gambia is required, SEE:

It's a shame that Mental health continues to have such a big stigma based purely on ignorance. Especially when you consider how common it really is. It would bed interesting for those who have family members in Gambia with mental health problems to be able to gain the necessary support to be able to share their experience of caring for family members or friends with these illnesses. Again this would be an opportunity for GRTS to do some Public Service. As for the Reporter he needs to either go and retrain as a Journalist or replaced for bringing his position in to disrepute.

I agree, sister. And I think this reporter should be removed. Using terms like 'kicked the bucket' in an article about a tragic murder reveals a primitive, immature and irresponsible personality. This Mr. Jammeh should write about the annual meeting of the cattlemen's association or something like that, not about delicate topics like this one.

You could not have said it any better ladies. This is the height of ignorance. His persistent stigmatising of people afflicted with an unfortinate illnesss is simply mind boggling. Equal condemnation should also be reserved for the newspaper and its editorial board. Shame on the Daily News. I was getting to like the paper but what a turn off this was. Shame on people who peddle in ignorance.

I have sent this topic to the Daily News Editor. This kind of reporting definitely shows the ignorance of the author about mental health and I hope that he takes note of your comments and outrage that this kind of reporting is very unprofessional and disrespectful to the victims of this incident.

Thanks for taking the initiative Momodou for forwarding on our comments to the Daily News Editor, I sincerely hope he gives an unreserved apology to the family in question for his Reporter's insensitive reporting of their tragic loss, and sacks the Journalist in question for the sadistic pleasure he took in stigmatizing the Mental ill and defaming the family.

Well, I suppose the Editor read the comments, but all he seemed to be interested in was an increase in readership figures,so that's the end of that then,Was your communication with the editor of any use.....I wonder.

Toubab, I guess the part about increase in wider readership was personal and not related to the article in question. The comments have been welcomed so lets hope that they use this constructive Criticism to improve the quality of the articles they publish. |

What is the evidence in this case?
Was the person responsible for the death definately mentally ill?
Or could they just have been angry and aggressive? Out of control?
If they are classed as a 'lunatic' what happens to them in Gambia?
Also looking deeper into the case, is there any explanation of why the person did this act? Sometimes there is something underlying the behaviour.

Could be it calls for a sensitisation conference on public awareness of the function of a journalist, to be held at The Atlantic Hotel ,with lunch of course
