i just read the $200 million "investment to be made to telecommunications industry in Gambia by a nigerian owned company.
In the this day of uncertainity who would invest $200m in gambia. This was announced after a meeting with the president!?!?
Should I take it for granted that yaya will hold shares in the company. If this happens, i would think they would own most of the telecommunications in the country, NOT A GOOD MOVE.

I think the law that prevented the president form engaging in certain business ventures has now been repealed. He would then be able to buy shares in the new venture. I hope they float th shares to the public so that there is a fairer representaion in the conpany that will evolve.

Any hope of benefiting from any economic opportunity while jammeh is in power should be forgotten. This guy is so greedy that he wants all for himself and no body else, period.

A South African electricity Co. wanted to invest into the electricity sector in the Gambia some years back and jammeh saw that as the perfect chance to improve his revenue stream and decide immediately to bring that potfolio under the office of the president.

He is simply a put-off to investors.

As far as Nigeria is cocerned, we should exercise caution. I am suprised that they are investing this much when their own telecommunication industry is in a mess. There was a time when we wanted to call some one in Kano. It took jours before we could get a connection. The problem was on their side.

I think Nigeria needs to improve their system first. However they may have already done so beacuse this experience was five years ago. I hope it leads to more trade in the subregion and the venture is nothing more than investment of public funds masqurading as private portfolios.

On top of that Konds, the telecommunication capacity is not sufficient. Its is very difficult to get a land line in Nigeria. It takes months for an application for a line to materialised.

Again like you said when you are dealing with Nigerians one must be very vigilant and cautious. They do not mind anything except filling their pockets. They are our African brothers but one must be mindful of them.

well there is already a significant presence of nigerian investment in the gambian. two of the banks (Guaranteed Trust & FIB)are nigerian owned and they are very successful and so far have behaved professionally.

one of the major insurance companies is also nigerian owned. the only gambian registered airline Slok Air is also nigerian own. all are very successful at least till 2005.

intra-african capital flow should be encouraged.

Certainly yes, they are very intelligent and could obviously be successful business people. But extreme care must be taken whhen dealing with them. They are smart and could be very dodgy.

Before you realise that they have inflicted a damage, it is already done. That size of investment is awesome althouth the period over which the investment is to be spread is not indicated and who are the main sponsores of this dear ie the share holders.

THIS IS JUST WHAT I WAS SAYING,WE ARE SO UNINFORM THAT WE BELIEVE THIS LIES ALL AGAIN.WHEN I WAS IN THE GAMBIA,I USED TO TELL MY FRIENDS THAT THE GOVERNMENT WILL KEEP WAITING FOR INVESTORS UNTIL OTHER GOVERNMENT COMES TO POWER. THEY WILL NEVER COME.ONLY SMALL BUSINESSMEN MIGHT COME TO MAKE MONEY.ECONOMICALLY,THE GAMBIA IS NOT FEASIBLE FOR INVESTORS LIKE THAT.I LOVE GAMBIA BUT JUST BEING REAL.WE ARE VERY POOR MONETARILY AND POPULATION -WISE.U INVEST NOT FOR CHARITY BUT FOR PROFIT.TO MAKE MONEY.IF PEOPLE DONT HAVE MONEY,HOW ARE THEY GOING PAY FOR PRODUCTS.IN WHAT ARE INVESTORS GOING TO INVEST IN WHEN THEY MAKE MORE PROFITS IN OTHER COUNTRIES.THIS IS WHY I LOVED PDOIS.THEY ARE THE ONLY SENSIBLE PARTY IN THE GAMBIA.I AGREE WITH WHAT THEY KEEP SAYING ABOUT US INVESTING FOR OURSELVES.THEY WILL NOT COME.WE GOING KEEP WAITING TILL I DONT KNOW WHEN.WHY NOT BE SENSIBLE LIKE PDOIS AND BUILD OUR OWN INDUSTRIES.

We must eleminate the channel of waste and begin to prioritise to fit into the club of forward-movers.

We waste tooooooo much. Look at the excesses of the jammeh government who annext all the previous government's vehichle for representing unneccessity.

Nigerians are very clever people but cunning too. The fastest calculating machine was developed by a Nigerian in the United States. Boy they are genius. They can do anything they set their mind to.

Their banks are working well so far i hope. Then again, central bank cannot be trusted. Continent bank went capout right before their own eyes. Continenet bank is profitable. The problem was cash flow management. You see you can be profitable and at the same time bankrupt. The cash out flow was more than the inflow to mainatin their obligations to customers in terms of withdrawals. All the money has been loaned to National Assembly Members without collateral. Now that they defaulted, they could not collect their monies and therfore cash trapped but profitable.

Central bank should have ensured that a cash flow ratio sufficient enough is deposited with them to enure buoyancy. That is why they are called bankers bank. I hope they will not mess up with the other banks and betray the customers

Konds, every bank is obliged to send daily returns to central for monitoring purpose by the bank. They should be able to pick any early signal of a trouble and take remedial actions. They have no excuse for lack of knowledge of potential trouble.

If some of these returns fail to reach the central bank at a certain time in the morning a hefty fine is levied. I could also result to other forms of repremand on the offending bank.

The other problem is that all the good brains are sacked therefore no quality in their work.
