| NOBODY IS AGAINST INVESTMENT IN THE GAMBIA WHETHER IT BE AFRICAN INVESTORS OR OTHERWISE.THE REALITY IS ,INVESTMENT WILL COME GAMBIA LIKE THAT.WE KEEP WAITING FOR IT AND IT WILL NOT COME BECAUSE INVESTORS INVEST FOR PROFITS NOT FOR CHARITY OR FRIENDSHIP.FOR THE GAMBIA WE HAVE BUILD OUR ECONOMY FOR INVESTORS TO COME.THEY HAVE TO SEE PROFIT.LIKE THEY SAY IN AMERICA.SHOW THE MONEY. |

"Mr Malamin added that the Gambian economy requires foreign investment and they are ready and willing to do just that. He also indicated interest in the energy, aviation, and tourism sectors. He noted that they want to use The Gambia as a test case before going on to other countries." (Daily Observer 2/5/06)
There is no disputing that there are profits to be made in these three sectors, maybe this is where some of the revenue will come from to make NAWEC more efficient. Monarch and Gambian Experience monopoly on Gambia's aviation and tourism sector definately needs to be broken up and if an African company is willing to invest millions within these sectors so be it. It beats these buck basement semicolonial enterprises any day of the week!

On tourism it's weakness has been not enough monitoring, evaluation of Projects and too much complacency going on in promoting the country. There needs to be more grassroots involvement within the Ethical Tourism Policy and new blood brought into to promote the Gambia more effectively. And a greater balance between what local people need and what tourists want. The largest beneficaries from Gambian Tourism are the Tour Operators and Airlines, not the Gambian population.

Investments in The Gambia is rather difficult. First of all the 'market' is very small. Population is now 1.3 million people I guess but the moderate Gambian has not much money to spend. Secondly power and water supply is often a huge problem which discourage foreign investments. Third : roads are ,except in the coastal area, very bad or non excisting. Transport withing the country and to the neighbour countries is slow, difficult and therefor expensive.
So i think investments only will come if the government is subsidising or can give a solution to this problems.
The only thing that could attracks foreign investors is the cheap labour... , but this is no special characteristic for the Gambia. |

jede, you mention cheap labour, the new five star sheraton emplys works from egypt!?!?, go figure, it is cheaper to bring in outside labour, i have seen building tht employ, senegalese, ghanians, nigerians, sierra leone, this is a practice that could be stopped. Gambia could be more pro-gambian in who they employ. |

Jambo, You're probably wright. However I know not enough about the salaries in the Gambia to add usefull information. I just wanted to say that in comparison with the European and American salaries, labour is cheap in Africa and Asia.. ( this is not a problem only for the Gambia). Even more we do have the same problems (huge ones) within the EU. As you know a lot of east european countries joined recently the EU-club and as the workers can freely move within the EU that causes some problems and frictions. And you're wright that Gambian investments should act more pro-gambian to stimulate local economy. I think however that this is something that has to be enforced by the government. If they give the permits to foreign hotel-chains to build new complexes they can add some provisions. |

| Jambo, I have some of the Egyptian workers staying at my compound whilst they are working on the Sheraton. They are technicians who are in charge of the general labourers and are on very good wages, being highly skilled. I think there is a problem here in the Gambia getting skilled and trained electricians, plumbers etc. I know from experience the ones we've employed to do electrial and plumbing jobs really haven't a clue or any tools, they just have a vague idea and take it from there!! I don't know if there are any training opportunities here either for young people to go into a trade of that sort, all the training here seems to be for computers, which is the same in the UK, which also is suffering from good tradespeople. We have given tools ie. drills, hammers, pliers, saws plastering trowels to various "tradesmen" to do jobs and let them keep them so that hopefully they will be better equipped for the next job, only to have them sell them to feed their families.Back to square one! The construction companies have to go elsewhere to find skilled people. |

toubab, you are right about that, but figures this the government had the opportunity to create apprenticeships for gambians. In china when a foreign company builds anything, they have to have a local person with them to pass on the knowledge, learning on the job is great. |
