This is a tribute to M.M. Secka , a Gambian journalist, actor and humorist who died recently by Dr. Abdoulie Saine. I picked this from allgambia.com . And to add my own voice to it , I will say the words of Ben Johnson, a Rennaissance poet and a contemporary of Shakespeare, about his beloved son: "rest in soft peace...for why will man lament the state he should envy. To have so soon 'scaped world's and flesh's rage"
Rest in peace M.M. , we will always remember you.
Now ladies and gentlemen , here is Dr. Saine's tribute:
Modou Musa Secka, (a.k.a. M.M.) departed this world unexpectedly on Monday, March 20, 2006 to the utter dismay and sadness of those who knew and loved him dearly. He was the consummate Renaissance Man- broadcaster, journalist, actor, and humorist, play-wright and budding novelist. What he lacked in physical statue, he more than compensated for with talent and a bigger than life heart. He was a gentle soul, a loving parent and husband as well as a loyal friend who was generous with his time and always eager to give and entertain. An eternal optimist, he saw the best in people.
I first met M.M. in late 1962 during our first year at Armitage High School. Even then, at a tender age, he displayed a worldly sophistication and an uncanny flare and ability for drama. As I recall it now, he joined us late at Armitage because he had spent his summer holiday in Bamako, Mali. This at a time when the bulk of his provincial classmates in Form one, never ventured outside their villages. M.M. quickly distinguished himself as an actor and humorist. His love of a good joke was surpassed only by his ability to tell them, which left his audience and especially his friends in joyous laughter. This was to serve him well in his varied future careers because in the course of his life, he reinvented himself and adapted to changing career circumstances and opportunities. M.M. was truly a genius with multiple talents who loved life and lived it zestfully. He accomplished in his relatively short life what would have, otherwise, taken others (less gifted) two or more life spans to accomplish.
By the end of his life, M.M. became a national celebrity who was loved and admired for his sense of humor on radio and television and respected for his writing and analytical skills as a journalist. He cared deeply for people and was one who never responded in the negative to a request. He remained to the end an avid optimist and believer in the redemptive and inherent goodness of people. He lived a life that was unconstrained by circumstances, always inspired by the promise of better times yet to come. When I saw him for the last time in January 2006, over lunch at the home he shared with one of his wives, Amie, his spirit was irrepressible, despite failing health.
M.M. was not a wealthy man or a powerful politician, yet he was all these because of his genuine love and concern for people- he was truly a man of the people. In his sojourn on earth he touched many lives; we are better as a nation and a people because M.M. had lived. I will always remember his disarming and gentle smile and most of all, his kind gaze. Both concealed and on occasion revealed a serious and deeply introspective disposition.
Farewell and rest in peace my friend, keep them laughing in Heaven as you did on Earth. And while you are at it, tell Katim, Mariama, Silla, Mam Mbye, Mam Yusu, Badou, Jobbs, Mbulla, Oumie, Halifa and Julia that we miss and pray for them.

Kayjatta,
I second the professor on this one. Actually, my counsin's wife is from their family, where i stayed then when i was going to high school. I remember MM come in the little "shorty" he was, with his glasses dangling on the face. He was fond of making jokes, and very humble. He very well, likes to critisise injustice.
The people of Basse, and the entire Gambian citizenry lost a national hero.
Rest in Peace Uncle Mod-Musa !! |

I know him very well both in his public and private life and in fact he live not far from our house in Tallinding. A very funny and humorous guy. I have never seen him angry. His trademark was the wide smiles and his cigarette and his glasses always on.
I remember watching one of his drama pieces where a friend died and in keeping with tradition, best friend were supposed to be the last people to leave the burial site. In the play, he accidentally had His grand boubou buried in the grave and when he wanted to go, he got stuck.
Fearing that his dead friend came back to life and holding his clothe, he shouted and told the dead friend to be serious and stop playing tricks now that he has died. He eventually managed to undress and ran for his life shouting. It is an episode that stayed with me whenever I saw him. He was really a great lover of the arts and Gambians will miss a big giant in this field. May his soul rest in perfect piece. AMEN

Kondorong,
i will share with you a true story. In 2002, i had a sarahulle friend visit us from New york. It was summer time here. Myself and my counsins were sitting at the parlor watching tv and cooking, as usual of the weekends then. The sarahulle boy was in the private room sleeping. On the whole he had a nightmare. The cover he had on was white, in the dream, he saw himself getting burried. Then, he forced himself out of bed, and ran pass us at the parlor towards the exit door. He was forced to stop at the door, with the room full of laughter. My cousin told me, 'sarahulle defa naw.'/the sarahulle is flying out here.
