Why is it hard for Gambians to take any kind of critique but like to criticise left, right, centre? Is that a sign of a lack of perseverance, patience and the ability of dialogue? Is it possible to have a meaningful dialogue without criticising and being criticised?

Janko,I think that its a built in blame culture and a feeling never to take responsibilty always blame someone else, after all every Gambian knows its never THEIR fault.Just think of any politician you know and you will realise what I mean |

toubab1020 Culture is not stagnant but dynamic. To blame culture would mean that Gambians never adapt to new conditions and developments. Gambians have adapted to many new ideas and have abandoned many as well. The cultural aspect does not explain the difficulty or rather impossibility to have normal dialogue with agreements and disagreement and not hostility. |

Janko. I accept what you say about new ideas,I will not even begin to try to explain what I think culture is,my definition is probably different to yours, however I just like you can "not explain the difficulty or rather impossibility to have normal dialogue with agreements and disagreement and not hostility." this is a fact and your words are very apt I understand what you mean perfectly, the reason for this ? I have no idea.I hope other posters can come up with an answer to this.I cannot. |

The latest example of Gambian intolerance faced with all forms of critique is the reaction to Mr. Fofana´s BBC article, “Gambia's pitiful political class”, Thursday, 24 September 2009; about the condition of Gambian politics, even though Mr. Fofana did not say anything new in his article. Instead of engaging him in a constructive dialogue to facilitate a good political discussion-atmosphere well overdue, most of the voices I hear do not only disagree with the points the article is making but went to the extend of attacking the writers persona.
Why make something public personal? Mr. Fofana must have touched a sensitive spot which is understandable, but for god sake confront him within the domain of the given discussion, engage him in a rational dialogue anything short of that helps him to make his point. |

Janko,We think along the same lines, you will notice that it is only you and I discussing this,I fear its a bury your head in the sand syndrome, just in case your fellow Gambians should feel that the solidarity of the brothers is being comprimised.Everything has to be on a personal level general discussion is difficult to comprehend. |

All the noise abt Fofana's article is because our opposition is at the receiving end. Imagine what the response would have been if the ruling party was at the receiving end?
Janko i agree with you on this one. We have to learn to accept divergent views that in itself is a democratic tenet. A wollof proverb goes thus: If you wanna be a hat you must accept to a shoe.
If we as opposition sympathisers cannot accept others to critise our party leaders rightly or wrongly what right do we have to tell the ruling party to accept crititism and accept divergent views? This is one of the major problems facing us Gambians. |

Most Gambians are prima donnas who cannot engage in constructive discussions. Instead of discussing "issues," they often go into pointless arguments. Most people don't really hate argument; but sadly, Gambians don't argue to make sense. They argue to WIN the argument by all means necessary, which includes personal attacks.

Do not invest your precious time to "call" anybody an "imbecile", prove him/her to be an imbecile. Hence if you do you would kill two birds with a single stone. One, you make him/her understand the imbecile s/he is and two, your point is made. Don’t you think? |

I don't understand what you are trying to say. You Sir Toubab, are sometimes very confusing. Your assertions that Gambians are how they are because they never take "responsibility" won't fly around here. It is human nature to refuse responsibility when faced with personal shortcomings. It is not a trait unique to Gambians.... how else would you explain the loads of Westerners panhandling in front of government agencies asking for welfare? When they clearly made choices that resulted to their respective predicaments...
Were you expecting a non-politically slanted thread under the section "Gambian politics?"
What exactly is a "slanging match?" My dictionary www.thefreedictionary.com can not find the phrase. BTW, feel free to use the dictionary too... since you're always at lost with words.

OK I will concede your point this was posted under Gambian Politics,I hadn't noticed that,I read the posting by Janko and replied in general terms in what I percieved as Gambian lifestyle,(that word is a replacement for "culture" I cannot think of any other!) Your dictionary didnt have the meaning of slanging match but this one did:

OK If I may ask a general question of yourself? can you please explain the meaning of these words to me?
