Brothers, if i may add some few observations here. i believe this exechanges might seems unhealthy, but funnly it is healthy. Advance societies went through the same quest for perfection and self-analysis just like we do in every forums today. In my opinion, journalism is a noble profession and everyone should try his/her hand on it. As kayatta said, the practinoners should try fine tuning their writing and adapting to new ways. But also we cannot under estimate the lack of time in the hands of the news providers. They are all just like any of us, with families, working, reading, attending to many other things. although minor errors should be taken care of, we should understand the pressure on the online papers. Kuno made some good analysis of the state of journalism as a matter of urgency to our country, but again it is as a result of the reppression that forces many good journalist to either quit the job as the hazards are too costly or use pen names. I also believe that, journalism is relevant to every known academic profession. the medical journals are commented and analysed by people of that profession, similarly the finance, economics, and the wider professions are regularly commented about by those train in it. there is no exception as to who can or can't be a journalist. As a society, we are growing and changing according to times. Not long ago, many in our country use to only mention few names when it comes to expertise and eloquence in many field of study. For instance, we don't even know who Kuno is, neither kayatta, but still they write eloquently and with care. this is how fast the Gambia is moving. gainako as a platform is also improving and run by didicate Gambians with good heart and respectful disposition. Our case is such that, we are all sort of on edge, this is all linked to the conditions on the ground. finally, let us just tune down the banter but continue of the self-analysis. thanks |

Santafara, thanks for your post. I am increasingly beginning to think that "there is a general Gambian aversion to criticism". I would think that those Gambians living abroad, especially in the U.S. should know better; but apparently no ... Nobody wants to be criticized. All they want to hear are praises and nice words, even if they do not deserve all of that... There was nothing wrong and outrageous about KUNO's appraisal of GAINAKO; but see what he got in return: a fierce attack and character assassination from the editors of GAINAKO... And kayjatta, who defended KUNO's position is now the hypocrit, hater, pompous, watchdog, and worse what not ... If these people-so-called journalists- cannot take good faith criticsm or feedback from their readers, they should quit the practice of journalism-even if they are only amateurs. KUNO's purpose is not to tear them down, and certainly that is not my purpose either. The purpose is to see GAINAKO continue to improve and meet the needs of its growing number of readers... How can these so-called journalists criticize Jammeh for intolerance and aversion to dissenting opinion when they cannot even accept an impartial feedback from a reader?

Kuno and everyone else chipping in here, lets call a spade a spade... Kuno, if you read my initial posting I accepted your criticism of Gainako in good faith and even went further to make promises that we will try to improve.
However, what is ironic here is that when you criticized you did not want to be criticized in return. We accepted your points and pointed out some flaws we observe in you and others as fellow Gambians.
Now judge who is in tolerance of criticism? So you want to go scott free as if you have no responsibility or role to play.
It really does not matter to me if you were let down or not but I will always accept criticism in good faith but at the same time will also criticize when I see people acting bias.
We as Gambians need to inject responsibility in ourselves... we want the freedom but just won't fight for it.
It is not enough to criticize and that is my point here. We must all admit that we have failed and decided to run away from our own country only to stand up against Jammeh thousands of miles away... if every Gambian did exactly what we did then who would stand against the tyrants.
Don't give me that good faith criticism... because if we were to reveal your identify then you will be guilty of misinformation and bias.
Kayjatta, all respect to you but it is time we stand up when it matters... it is easy to utter words and I know exactly where Kuno is coming from... This is why Pa Nderry doesn't spare them a bit because he knows what kind of people he is dealing with.
The finger pointing is enough and give credit where it is due period.. |

Dbaldeh I have to admit that you are a more conscious, level-headed person than the irrational, borderline Baghdad Bob (Dalton). I am sure GAINAKO needs more people like you with better judgment and communication skills. Having said that, I have to bring to your attention that your readers are your constituency (your clientele, your customers); they vote for you every time they click that mouse to visit and read your newspaper. Therefore, you are answerable to them; they are not answerable to you. It is important that you welcome their feedback and criticism without counter-attacking them with your own criticisms of them. Remember that many service or client-based ventures pay for the opinion of their clients (readers, customers, or what not...). Up to now I think your response to readers' feedback is less than gracious. While the current war of words between you and your reader(s) may somewhat publicize your paper, in the long run it could hurt your readership volume. Also do not try to push to your readers the idea that you are doing them a favor by establishing a newspaper. It is simply not true, we all know that there is more to it than that. If you need funding, vigorously solicit funding; there are thousands of ways to do it, but first cater to the demands of your readers as much as you can. There is perhaps no better way to do this than first understanding your readers... I do not know why Gambians like to threaten or bluff people (especially opponents) by telling them that they will "expose or reveal their identities" as if those people are 'witches'? Going back to the Gambia to "fight for freedom"? Unless you want to be a sell-out like Madiba, you probably need to ask F.J. Manneh, Dida Halake, the seven journalists at Mile Two. At least those are living witnesses. I once gave an interview to the Daily Observer (before it was taken over by the pro-APRC management), a few days later a letter arrived that nobody is allowed to talk to the press. Is that the Gambia you are telling us to return to and raise my children? Dbaldeh you leave first, I will follow you I promise. I think it is also far-fetched to think that it is only by returning to the homeland that the diaspora can effectively contribute to political change. The financial, informational, and organizational resources being generated in the diaspora today is effective in impacting economic and political affairs in the Gambia, particularly. Besides, there is abundant local civil institutions in the Gambia to wage an effective struggle for change. The courts, the Bar Association, opposition political parties, student organizations, labor organizations, human rights groups, media organizations, the general population, and others; can bring about any change the Gambia needs today. Back in 1993, Dr. Senghore lamented the flight of the African intellectual, and added that we must continue to contribute to the homeland, even if only at the level of ideas. I concur... |

Kayjatta, thanks for the opinion and I would respectfully disagree with your charaterization of my colleague Yero. I think he is a fine gentle man humble to the bone. Our disagreements here should not translate into hatred or condemnation of each other.
I completely understand the moral ground on catering to your readers and we appreciate every support but as I maintain and will continue to maintain the relationship between readers and those that supply information should be mutual. There is a duty and responsibility from both sides... while we owe the readers a thank you, they equally owe us a thank you for the sacrifice.
Someone has to do it and for us it is passion and the desire to make an impact in peoples' lives. We will continue to do this no matter what...
What is frustrating and that you probably is overlooking is the fact that when duty calls we should respond and should we fail to do so, then we should live with the consequences and that is all I was trying to communicate to brother Kuno...I am absolutely convince that Kuno has more in him than he revealed.
It would have been more effective and genuine if Kuno had send Gainako a private mail and express his concerns. However, should you resort to the public domain for such open criticism genuine or not, then you risk getting a response like we did here.
There is also one think many people fail to comprehend.. the bantaba is just what it is a bantaba where we can agree and disagree in a casual way... I gurantee you, you will never see the kind of response we made here on Gainako... At the bantaba we can affort to be less professional and just be boys and girls just like when we are chatting in our Ataya vues...
So thanks for the contribution but I think Kuno is closer than he made it to be and that was the point... we have made our point and are willing to move forward to bigger and better issues... |

GWB,
I just want let you know...we all should be very careful. We have other important engagements to get into than living the life of crabs. As far as I am concerned, I am not complement-driven and my associates are not. My sincerity and genuiness cannot be measured by people who are ingenuine themselves. The same applies to my associates, or those that I associate with it. Let us not exercise ingenuiness such that it puts us in positions of hypocrisy, hating and in self-denial. I know, without boasting, I am a trained professional in my own field of work. I do not see myself as a forum teacher yet, but a humble student. People who engage me nicely will get the same thing. Those that believe in bullying deserves nothing less or more. Regarding criticism, it is relative...mostly fake by those that go by misconstrued written definations ...it is more to do with its practical form. Don't think one bit, you can annoy/provoke someone in the name of "constructive criticism" and think you will go scott-free with it. Try it with anyone and come back and tell this forum the conclusions of your experiment, and you wholly failed that test I put you through anyways. If someone thinks he is educated enough but cannot be humble or communicate a simple message, then something is wrong with that. Having being in the scineces, just like yourself...we know about heat and conductivity. If you ever put someone's hand to burn, yet you think yours should be spared...O my dear, that is not true! There is no criticism law stating that. If you are Malcolm styled like me, you got to be humble, laughing, smiling, loving, sharing, complementing others with good heart, etc...and where one stands in your way in no civil manner or with disrespect, it is your right to defend yourself "by all means necessary" and as may be available to you. This is just a fair rule in nature. Babe, you got to fight back...you got to fight to exist...and you got to exist in real time...and I personally cannot live with fear. I was born to be free and I believe every human is. Just go far back as you can in my interactions...and I was never charged with dispect, insensitivity or being dishonest anywhere, it is just normally the same charge of reacting too hard.
On a note, if details emerging are to go by, how can you be talking to people on the phone...dinning with them day and night, yet still, can change werewolf over night, trying to enage them unnecessarily when all along the person considered himself as part of you, until recently...and when he was bullied by other outlets, on the whole, it might have been for the good, and for the sake believing in freedom for all, we came all the way fighting for him...to add to this latest sameful topic...limping with wounds and scars from one forum with one name or pen to another. As I keep saying, day will always break. And I will give that credit to S.M.O Aka.
The wounded Gambian struggle is a very sad and sympathetic one. I personally lost hope and confidence in some of the minds I see around. Some of the minds are worst than Jammeh. I do not know if you are subscribed to other forums. I have said many times that we need a system change ourselves, less Gambia is doomed for ever. We are not only dealing with Jammeh but such would be "wrong ones" sooner or later. It is that time we echo aloud former US President's quote, "Ask not what your country can do for you; but what you can do for your country" and we can modify in our own words as may be exusable "Ask not what the media can do for you; but what you can do for the media." If you believe in yourself the way i do...the way that I dream about nations and people...you got to be practical in it...you got try no matter what.
GWB, between me and you, if you like to engage in healthy debates...keep on, and my promise to you and any centered on distractions and crab games, with all honesty...I will retaliate any aggression as I deem it fitting...besides, no heart-feeling at all over this encounter we just had. In giving advice and sharing criticism, you can't act the bully...and pretend to be the victim when you get an equal response of criticism whether mild or harsh. What you saw wasn't even the angry me...wallahi, I tell you that much. I just intended to equally put you in the same shoes of bullying-type and to show readers that it is normally faked when people keep saying it aloud...you could have been quiet too without responding....then readers will say....O well, GWB can withstand criticism...and I cannot help secretely as I laughed hard, watching you escape that shoe thrown at you in Bagdad....I swear!
Baldeh, Thanks though but don't waste your time. You cannot help more than it has been seen. Even though the debate should always end this way, you know you cannot change some of these minds. You know this is a routine online. The very readers here and even moderators of forums are aware of it...but none can help you, because a 'werewolf' is a dangerous thing to deal with it. It is nothing but humans during day with human faces, and during dark...the instinct visits...and there, they are in that funny shape. It becomes a disease as part of them...a cankerworm that they cannot heal in the end. If you equaly bully them, they cry and scream foul aloud....when that's exactly what they are dragging you into, to falsely show justifications of their finger-pointing. Sometimes, it is a set-up. Some can even route their postings far and while. The truth remains, it sounds too good to be real, being that man...owning up to who you are.. As far as I am concerned...we are better getting charged with errors of language than intellectual dishonesty, pomposity, and terror....O yes, we are all humans dealing with our fellow humans. There is no angel among humans, as such I will as usual let God and His time preside...and we will rise, we will remain that brand no doubt...come rain, come shine! I know we are loved and respected...and that price must give birth to other things.
Aluta Continua! Out of respect for readers, contributors and the very moderators, I rest my case till again!
D..

| Dalton fix your head while you still can. There is no debate between you and I. The issue is that KUNO criticised your paper, you insulted him in return. Then I advised that, even though I do not read your paper, editors at your paper should not condemn critics, you started insulting me too. That is the issue, you got it ??? |
