Dr. Lenrie Peters, an internationally-acclaimed British-trained Gambian surgeon, novelist, poet and entrepreneur died of heart failure. Peters is my hero, the man I have always considered the most important Gambian scholar/intellectual and writer. Peters arguably is the father of Gambian literature, the Gambia's William Shakespeare if you wish. He is a reservoir of knowledge and wisdom. This is a massive loss to the Gambia and Africa. May his great soul rest in absolute peace.

I have been privileged to have Peters' friendship in the past. I remember the times I met him at his Farato Farms together with his pot-bellied farm manager and sat in the passenger seat where his famous muse used to occupy while he drove between Farato and Brikama. A very quiet, humble man with white hair and exalted face that points to his remarkable wisdom, Peters was an avid reader of National Geographic. The last time I visited him at the Westfield clinic shortly before my departure from the Gambia, he was sitting behind a desk in his office with a National Geographic magazine near by ... Peters' great personality is illustrated by the numerous philanthropic causes and selfless service to the Gambia and Africa particularly ... Peters, in his writings glorified the return of the diaspora following independence in Africa as exemplified by his own return from England as a medical doctor to work in rural Gambia (see Peters' poem "Homecoming"). Peters also served as chair of WAEC (West African Exam Council) and as chair of the NCC (National Consultative Committee) that brought the end of military rule in the Gambia. Peters is a remarkably distinguished Gambian who helped put the Gambia's name on the world map. I hope he gets a fitting state burial ... You have clearly done more than your best, so go rest in perfect peace my friend ... |

Dr. Peters was indeed a great poet and widely respected surgeon specially during his days at Bansang Hospital. He is one of those who I believe deserve a national monument. May his soul rest in perfect peace. |

| This is indeed very sad news and a great loss to our nation. A great man with a great mind who contributed immensely to our national development. He will be sorely missed and I also pray that he rests in peace. I have used his services as a doctor at the Westfield clinics and I found him to be so wonderful and helpfully understanding . This man was a collosus in my view and he has left a huge vacume on his departure. |

The cold hands of death has snatched another one of ours from our midst -a highly respectable man. He was able to represent his ideas in writing. It makes a lot of difference today, because even though he is gone, his true legacy remains. May Allah swt who knows best show mercy to a departed soul. The quranic verse "kulli nafsin eja ekat'l mawti" cannot be challenged. Even Esa (PBUH) will come down to go through this process.

It appears that only in death is there an agreement. Thats is a tragedy. Like the mandinka say; FALLIKULU TENTU (Praising the carcass of a donkey).
We should praisse the living while they are alive and not rally behind death to give praises. Praise me for the good things i do while i am alive and not when i am dead.
May his soul rest in peace |

Paying tributes in the interests of HUMANITY is not praise singing!
For the records Doctor was popular in many discussions of ATHEISM! He contributed a lot to the community but his religion is private for him alone! So prayers inspired on GOD came from a believer as gift to non-believer; in the interests of humanity. Presently only humanity counts as "Kulu nafsi saayi haatul mawti!"; interpretes as "Anyone who taste life must also taste death!" In religion there is dignity for the human being! In wollof "neng ko sutura!" or "Jambi dang go wara sutural!" That is what count now comrade Kondorong.
Some don't even need, fear or think about God! To those who fear God, they understand that God judges best! Thats why they (believers) always invoke GOD for hope, consolation & strength to move on forever! |

PETERS: an ode to Dr. Lenrie Peters.
By Kayjatta.
Peters Surgeon Poet Novelist Pan-Africanist Enterpreneur Philanthropist Farmer A great human being
Peters Yours was a large heart Tamed as pumpkins Lived in a large house Laughed with humbler people too Watched by a jealous muse That Artemis with a ruptured uterus That you cared so much about
Peters Ours is an invisible community Those who ask for truth justice and beauty Without the might of the gun Or the mercy of gospel Now your death hang limp on my shoulders With guilt of these new people But these new people Knows not the wisdom of Katchikali These new people Of vacuum cylinders
Peters You leave us Peters With this serious business of living
Peters Peters We call to you We reach out to you Peters There are no answers We know you were lent to us 76 years Now why should we lament What we should envy Your wisdom, your healing hands, older than fossils Lent a better world to us Your wisdom Cannot be silent cannot be forgotten
Peters Rest in soft peace now You will live in our hearts forever
This peom is adapted from Peters' own writings as well as the writings of the Rennaissance poet Ben Johnson.
