I have been given some land by the akalo of Kolior for the building of the nursery school.

He stated this in public and showed me the land. He shook hands with me in public infront of other important people in the village.

Now I have heard stories of people building public buildings on such land and then the person who gifted the land denies the arrangement and claims the building for personal use.

Do I need to insisit on the land being registered to me?
I am a bit embarrassed to ask.

"Insist" as your choice of word is probably not befitting to this scenario, because more than likely this alkalo is interested in seeing development in the area and means well. i would have said "negotiate," especially after that kind gesture.

But there are rules and regulations in the Gambia called "Land tenure" which governs ownership of land. This is recommended especially after all that has been seen under the micoscope of land disputation. Get a legal counsel involved, and register the land under your name, business entity, or etc...as may be applicable. You can humbly ask him for his opinion too...

Disclaimer: The above is just an opinion and not a legal advice.

Thanks Dalton..I will suggest it has been recommended to me. It could be registered to the projects name perhaps. I dont want to gain personally, but neither do I want things to go wrong and the children loose their building.

Hi Bev;

Land is a common problem like you noted. There are others involved in the habbits of selling the same piece of land to more than 3 or even 4 people. People end up loosing their funds and resources. Therefore,
1. get the alkalo papers
2. go to the area council, either brikama, kanifing or Banjul
3. finally, you will need a sketch draft submitted with lands.

keep your registration papers underneath your pillows for what may come later...

in any ways, a nursery school is a good project. &you all keep it up.

& good luck,

hi bev, if you have been offered the land by the Akolo, get witnesses, preferably someone educated in land matters or local issues.
Try to find the MP for the area, the reason I say this if anything happens who is on your side, get a journalist to cover your story, it will make good reading, Local leader donates land to British citizen to build nursery. Verbal contracts have a different meaning in other countries.
It is not always about money, but people ask who was their, who saw this event, show me a contract, show me something in writing.
