This poem by Aisha Saidy is very interesting. It is also a difficult one. I am still trying to decipher this remarkable poem, but there are a few things that I have to comment on right now. This poem's dicta is similar to some of my own writings in the sense that it borrows a lot from science. The author utilized a number of jargon derived from anatomy, perhaps the author has some background in science as reflected in this poem. For example look at this exerpt from the poem above:
"What will it take? A zillion bartholin's gland Clone with superman's breath To curtail the vas deferens???"
1. Bartholin's glands also called vestibular glands are two glands on the left and right of the vaginal opening. 2. Vas deferens also called ductus deferens are two tubes or ducts that transport sperms during ejaculation in males. 3. Neurons are nerve cells that transport signals in the form of electrical impulses from from the external and internal environment throughout the body.
All of these organs play important roles in corpulation in general and in orgasm in particular. The author also said that:
"Many balls castrated, Eve escaped into thin air."
This might symbolize reproductive failure as Eve escapes into thin air, and Eve herself could represent womanhood and female sexuality. However, the author might have social and political connotations for this symbolism.
"Since ego-centrism has Metamorphosized the neurons Of the disperse elites."
This could be alluding to the insensitivity of our Gambian elites (such as Santanfara, Turk, John Dalton, and of course Kobo ).
This is it for now. I will have to disect this poem piece by piece to see what sense I can make out of it. |

Kay, you are so funny. I too had a difficulty getting the main themes of the poem. A very sophisticated line-up. Deep thinking i would say. Continue kay, you made a lot of sense with the first attempt.

I too dizzled over this poem for a minute. It brought in some science which even makes it simpler to understand. The poem, mighty one...talks about power intoxication, intellectual prostitution and constant terror. In it, the author narated that the wrong doer tries to justify whatever wrong s/he does because none else makes sense to him/her.
"Many balls castrated,"
I think this one speaks volumes, revelations of tortures inflicted on humans. Castration is the process of removing the testis to make animals easy to tame. It's usage here, not necessarily "physical castration" is used to denote extreme dehumanization on others.
The author asked what will it take to end this madness? She suggested some ways, a way of forceful resistance, thus "A zillion bartholin's gland Clone with superman's breath" I think Bro Malik Al Shaba (born Malcolm Little) would say "By all means necessary."

Very intriguing poem, i can't stand not understanding it fully. I keep reading it aloud again and again. Note that the words 'Intellectually Sterile' are between brackets, they are not her own words. I think someone is using it as an excuse not to be the one she wants him to be. What will it take for him to come back to her as a lover? A zillion of (impulses?? - what's the word?) Bartholin's gland(s) coupled with the breath of Superman (to give these impulses the right direction? Alas, she has to come to the conclusion that there are too many 'important' signals, and her man is selfishly wrapped up in his own elitism - he thinks the world can't survive without him playing his supposedly important part. I might be wrong (but then, i might also be right) |

I also second your analysis Sis. Anna. In any ways, abuse of authority (whether relationship, leadership, or even media) is involved. I promise to get you the answer to the poem from the author...as time permits.

Dalton, that would be nice - hope you will find the time to let us know what Ms Saidy meant to say with this strange poem.
T1020: it's not as if men are inscrutable, we women can see right through them (have no clue about Chinese men, though ), with all their airs and selfimportance they forget that we would like them to be 'just' our down to earth men and lovers (or else we would prefer to 'escape into thin air' - what else can you do).
Kay, aren't you clever - i had no clue about Bartholin's glands and vas or ductus deferens. Did you study anatomy or is this your hobby |

You are right as usual Anna, tell me please when you have unlocked the riddle of the Poem I am totally confused,it must mean something, take this bit for example "Since ego-centrism has Metamorphosized the neurons Of the disperse elites"

I have to say again that this is a very difficult poem. The author seems to have done a good job in embedding her thoughts in vivid but elusive imagery. Any interpretation of this poem will perhaps at best be speculative, mine certainly is. I could be way off but this is what I think of this poem by Aisha. Proverbially, giving a self-definition To all his doings Amidst the fact that None makes sense to his groin The usefulness of which Would have earned him a monarchy Nay, the multitude of it Already endangered us all Leaving the community "Intellectually Sterile.'' Many balls castrated, Eve escaped into thin air.
This part appears to be about a leader, national or community who justifies a lot of his transgressions by defining them in his own way. Yet none of that measures up to his manliness or manhood (as in “none makes sense to his groin”). If his justifications or perhaps manhood were useful this leader would have earned a large following (a monarchy). But then the author seems to change the argument by implying that the size of his following “already endangered us…” resulting in intellectual sterility since those who know something either leaves or keeps quiet. This is where castration comes in, intellectual impotency I guess as in (“many balls are castrated”). Because of this intellectual sterility, Eve has to escape. There is no place for a woman (Eve) where the man is sterile, at least in the Darwinian sense. But Eve could symbolize not only reproductive failure but also flight of an asset, human or natural. What will it take? A zillion bartholin’s gland Clone with superman's breathe To curtail the vas deferens???
Here the author seems to offer a solution. But it is not an easy solution for it will take the power of Superman to do this. But the author chose an ‘unusual’ method of doing this, that is “cloning… to curtail the vas deferens”. This is perhaps also because Eve has already escaped. Eve had to escape because “many balls “were “castrated”. Therefore, the force, the power, the potency, the manliness albeit all presented in sexual terms is lacking to make this solution questionable.
“Since ego-centrism has Metamorphosized the neurons Of the disperse elites. “
This part could be referring to Diaspora community as “disperse elites”. If it is then the author sees some transformation and selfishness in this community. This perhaps brings to mind some bickering that have been rumbling in some parts of the Diaspora community lately.
