If a poem by Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream and not make dreams your master;
If you can think and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:

| A powerful poem by a master, Toubab am I detecting boredom from you on this column releasing perhaps not so erudite poems as the one you posted ? Surely we can only but try our own hand in this business perhaps one day we too would be considered as good if not very good one day ,that is "IF" we persevere. You can get it if you really try , try and try and try you succeed at last sang a great singer em somewhere in this wonderful world some time ago. I just wonder that is why I asked this question , may be your answer would help sort me out . This is no flak brother , so no need for a helmet , ha ha ha. |

Kaanibaa,not at all,I think that I posted "IF" because most of the other poems that have been posted on bantaba appeared to be very deep and have many hidden meanings not being of Gambian culture they were difficult for me to relate to. I thought that "IF" was an example of a straightfoward poem.No ulterior motive at all I assure you ,so please don't look for a message there is none except the poem itself which I think is great.

| Poking ooops sorry, and right cue for with that last caution you really sent me to bed , as my darling wife snores near me , I thus must gently slide under the covers and go to sleep gently I hope . You surely are full of witty realism and a good share of gentle humour. Thanks and you too go to sleep mate and happy dreams now. |

There you go again using words that just fit the situation exactly,  no wonder you are a poet, but I don't envy you if your wife ever reads what you have written |

| She does read them if she has time that is and why envy me at all , I am cool you know.But if you say so ,then that is fine by me , friend. My writings are a hobby which I enjoy so much,because she respects my independence as I do hers we do not have any problems here. Perhaps I should go back to my postings and see where I erred in the domestic arena , paying attention to your innuendo. |

| Being human as we all are ; women just like men, not all but some do snore, come on brother you can't be serious now! To say women do not snore is bringing up an argument on line as I can sense it. That is fine as it always is , so I wait to see if other posters will agree with you on that line. Surely I missed your point as I read you wrong , being a good writer yourself you can get any one lost on your imports and meanings hereby as was the case for me so excuse my French okay. You spoke English and it being a borrowed language for me I guess I can be excused for my shortage of understanding it once in a while. My wife surely snores but denies it every time I raise the topic , I even recorded her snoring as I laughed and commented on the event using my mobile phone voice recorder for this. I still failed to win the debate as she said that the recording was not of her snoring, so I gave up as usual ,knowing that men can never win any argument with women or can they ? In fact she was scolding me for saying that she snores as I did on my posting so you did score a point there. |

| Yes Kaan,it was not a case that your wife snored, or not snore, but a case that she may think that you were making an ungentlemanly comment about her, so, You would get told off.I did not mean to enter a discussion as to if women snore or not.I am sorry that I do not speak as many languages as you and I am very surprised that English is not your first language,your first being french in western languages (after African born language your english is very good indeed,I hope that you can understand now that I was making a small joke when I made my posting about snoring,nothing more. |
