Is he really British? Not that it matters - I guess it's better not to speak too loudly in public these days ...

Lily, don't worry - the guy turned out to be Dutch .
Anyway, be careful and smile at the police . You too, Bev - because if i were you i wouldn't put my hope on your Bantaba friends, most of them have a bad reputation themselves because of what they write here (well, perhaps Turk could be of some help but then again maybe not because he calls himself 'the devil's advocate ).

I say listen what advise anna provided for you. You go there, enjoy your holiday. Do your charity work. Be positive. Let Gambians in Gambia deal with the Gambian politics.

If you want to change Gambia and improve standards, what is better way than what you are doing with the nursery?

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

For all the years I've been going to Gambia I've seen people worried about these police checks. It's normal to get out of your car when asked and just hand over 5, or just pass it out of the window. I tried to argue with them one time, and was told in no uncertain terms by a very trusted friend to shut up. It's a worrying turn when someone who was probably being nothing more than mildly obnoxious is charged with sedition.

Mind you, information control is the new world order. There have been anti-capitalist demonstrations in London yesterday and you'd be astonished at the disparity between indy and mainstream reporting. Someone died. The mainstream media had lines in all the popular press as soon as they could this morning blaming it on 'the unruly mob' whereas information coming from indymedia sources tell it a bit different.

It might not seem like the same thing but it's all part of a continuum.
