I understand that anyone who now employs someone will have to pay a D40,000 per annum employment tax per person. I think this will be the death knell of many companies in Gambia puting many Gambians out of work not least resturants affecting tourism and also charities operating in the Gambia. Also I hear a tax on all people operating bore holes for their water and finaly a tax of 35 euros on tourists. What with the value of the Dalasi and the economic recession. Things are not looking good for Gambia

If your information is correct, which I hope it isn't,this will be the end of The Gambia as a country for people to make a business in,hotels will wither and die because they cannot make money AND pay a tax of D40,000 per year on their employees.Personally I find it hard to believe that such taxes would be imposed.Tourism is VITAL to Gambia and anything that affects that will be the final straw. It would be very good to restore confidence, if those bantaba members who have contacts within the administration can confirm or deny these proposed taxes. |

you have got to be kidding, if this is true look at the bigger picture, where is the money kept, in the bank of gambia at todays rate of exchange = £1,111.00, who earns that amount in Gambia to be able to pay this tax. Is this a standard tax right across the board. what do people get for this |

So it appears that only Toubab business owners and forien charities will be hit? Except for the other tax on boreholes that everyone will have to pay toward |

Snuggles, I don't think this is something new because I was part of a group which helped to pay around D30.000,00 yearly NGO fee in 2008, for a 100% Gambian NGO.
Its is tax based economy. |

What is NGO. It seems strange that it is this year that you repeatedly hear that the business community are all up in arms about it if it is not a new tax ? |

Doc.You appear to know all about these taxes, all the rest of us are in the dark, could you please elaborate on your first brief posting which confirmed what Snuggles had heard, just the basic information if you could, not the full Revenue raising operation that exists,I know that many "Foreigners" who read bantaba in cyberspace want to come and do charity work and perhaps run a small business your knowledge would be invaluable to them to make up their minds to see if their operation is viable. |

So the way round this is then easy, as long as the Main stakeholder is a national of one of the 15 member states you are exempt from these taxes.
This is how some organisations are getting around this hmmmmmmmmmm |

The UN will never pay local taxes or even rent. No permanent UN staff has their salary taxed either. That's why their main HQ moved to New York and there's no real UN presence in the UK, Gordon Brown tried to make them pay rent. |
