Gambia beat Cameroon to claim semis place
03-22-2009

Subject : Gambia beat Cameroon to claim semis place

The Baby Scorpions of Gambia became the first team to qualify for the last four at the ongoing 8th CAF U-17 Championship after a 2-0 win over Cameroon in their Group “A” clash on Sunday in Zeralda.

Goals from Dawda Ceesay and Alasane Camara in each half ensured the Scorpions maintained their unbeaten run at the championship.

The result, the second successive loss for the Indomitable Cubs, winners in 2003 effectively keeps them out of contention.

The Gambians who appeared the more organized of the two sides broke the deadlock on 20 minutes Ceesay’s header before Camara sealed victory with a strike in the 75th minute.

The Cameroonians also had a fair share of the exchanges but failed to make the most of the chances that came their way.

Egypt-born coach of Gambia, Tarik Souaghi was full of praise for his team’s performance.
"I am very satisfied with the performance of my team and the result. Our next match is against Algeria, I will like to give chance to other players.”

His Cameroonian counterpart, Abbé Christian acknowledged the strength of the Gambian side but blamed his team’s ability to recover after the opening goal as their bane.
"We could have claimed a better result but my players were frustrated after the first goal. We have a young team that has talented players and must continue working to build a team for the future. ",

Well done Baby Scorpions!!! I watched the first match on Gambia TV and was really impressed with boys even though i think they should start burying the numerous chances they had in front of goal and the commentary was in French. They could easily win this tournament if they are more ruthless with their goal scoring opportunities.

Thanks guys for the updates. i just noticed that we now have six MLS players and many more playing in Europe. We need to maintain it at the grassroots which seems to be happening and it is progresive. GO BABY SCORPIONS AND WATCH OUT FOR THE SCORPIONS IN THE FUTURE. Shaka what do you think?

Gambia claims Group “A” top spot
03-25-2009

The Gambia claimed top spot of Group “A” at the ongoing 8th CAF U-17 Championship after a 2-0 victory over hosts Algeria on Wednesday in Zeralda.

The hosts were without some regular faces including first choice goalkeeper Abdennour Merzouki and midfielder Houssem Ferkous who were both suspended. Striker Nadir Bendhame who scored twice against Guinea and Cameroun was used as a substitute.

The Baby Scorpions registered the first goal in the 26th minute when a corner kick from Dawda Ceesay was deflected by an Algerian defender into his net.

The hosts responded positively but failed to tally the score despite the home support and creative football where it mattered most for them to score.

The second period saw both teams making tactical changes. Despite bringing on their top scorer Bendhame, Algeria found it impossible to score. To add to their worries, the Gambia added another goal in injury time from striker Ebrima Bojang.

At the post match conference, Gambia’s Coach Tariq Saigy commended his players whilst the team continues to build on their achievement.
His Algerian counterpart, Othmane Jbrir conceding defeat, while adding their focus is now on the semi-final, with their target on a place at the last two.

The group’s other match between Cameroon and Guinea in Dar El Beda ended barren. The result meant that both teams failed to score at the championship.

The future is bright Ylowe. The one area Gambian football development was stunted has been the exposure of Gambian footballers at professional level to competitive leagues in Europe and else where. The move by government and the GFA to develop Gambian football at cadet level had certainly yielded great results. Today we can boast about being one of the best teams at this level in both Africa and the world. I hope this current crop of youngsters can go on to surpass their predecessors and win a junior World Cup as well as progress to senior level where we badly need to make a mark. Atleast help Gambia qualify for the first time in a major international tournament. Way to go Baby Scorpions!!!!

Gambia’s Scorpions sting Malawi into finals
03-29-2009

The Baby Scorpions of Gambia booked their place in the finals of the ongoing 8th CAF U-17 Championship in Algeria after a 4-0 thrashing of Malawi in the semi-final clash in Zeralda on Saturday.

The Malawian Junior Flames who replaced the Young Menas of Niger, after the latter’s disqualification for age cheating were simply no match for the Baby Scorpions, who proved their worth with four unanswered goals.

The Scorpions, yet to concede at the championship, scored the first goal after two minutes through Pateh Nyang before Alasana Camara authenticated his side’s lead on 18 minutes with a perfect strike.

The Gambians, winners in 2005 out-marked their Malawian counterparts in every department of the game had their efforts rewarded with two further goals in the second half.

Striker Ebrima Bojang put his side three goals up on 53 minutes before Saihou Gassama sealed victory with the fourth goal ten minutes from time.

The victory confirms the Baby Scorpions as one of the emerging giants of youth football on the continent, and sets the stage for the final clash against the winner of the Burkina Faso-Algeria semi-final clash.

Gambia will meet host country Algeria in the final after Algeria's lone goal victory over Burkina Faso in their semi-finals.
