GAMBIA/SENEGAL DERBY: TOMORROW "LE PETIT POUCET" FACES THE DOUBTING OGRE. Having proven her worth among the smaller categories of world football, The Gambia is seeking prestige among giants. The first test of such nature: Senegal. Galvanized by a considerable breakthrough in FIFA rankings and an honourable exit against Liberia, the Scorpions have only one wish:to finally ring the bell against the Lions.
Just weeks before the start of their qualification campaign for the FIFA World Cup, South Africa 2010, the Gambia made its entry into the top 100 of FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. For the Scorpions, it is a historical moment. Their highest ranking so far has been 101st place obtained in September 1994. Today it had moved by 19 places and arrive at 83rd highest in the world. She is now the 16th highest among African nations. This breakthrough bodes quite well for the Gambia and was confirmed from the very start of the playoffs by stalling Liberia to a very valuable draw away from home. One way to show that progress is not coincidental, but a long-term work. The Gambia who had represented Africa in two FIFA junior tournaments, won the African under-17 championship in 2005 and participated in the wake of the World Cup in the same category. The under-20s followed the lead of their juniors in qualifying for the World Cup. This means that the Gambia has so far developed a good youth policy with the single objective: to one day compete with the seniors. And the match against the Lions tomorrow in case of a victory, would sound like a click. Unfortunately for them, they fall on a Senegalese team seeking to bounce back after receiving a good slap in Ghana.

By the way this is what i gathered from the French meaning of Le Petit Poucet
Le Petit Poucet is a famous tale by Charles Perrault . In short, a poor family menaced by famine decide to get rid of their children by losing them in the woods. The youngest child "Petit Poucet" understands what his parents are plotting. He collects stones and drops ("égrener" in French) them one after the other behind him to ascertain they'll find their way back home. If I remember well, the story ends well.

Be careful what you say to me in French, because i might just think that you are swearing at me. My French is very, very elementary. The above is what i managed to piece together from what is usually a poor internet translation. I also hope the match would finish in peace with the Scorpions finally beating the long hoodoo of our inability to beat our cousins across the border. My prediction 2-1 to the scorpions. COME ON YOU SCORPIONS!!!! |

I think it's Musa Bajaha. I am not sure if Gambia's number 1 Pa Dembo is available this time around. |

Gambia 0-0 Senegal, end of first half. Brilliant performance by the Scorpions in the first. They made the Senegalese super stars look quite ordinary to be frank. Njogu Demba and Mustapha Jarju(Toubabo) upfront gave the Senegalese defense a torrid time, with both of them coming quite close to breaking the stalemate. Senegal are down to ten men after Abdel Mangane was sent off for a second yellow card. With a little bit of luck the scorpions can pull off a shocking victory here. Hope they up the momentum in the second half.
Gambia starting lineup: Goalkeeper: Robert BADJIE(Papis) Defense: Aziz Corr Nyang, Abdou Jammeh, Ousman Colley, Pa SAIKOU Kujabi Midfield: Ebou Sillah, Mathew Mendy, Idi Sonko, Tijan Jaiteh Strikers: Njogu Demba and Mustapha Jarjue |

Indeed it was a great game. There has been marked improvement on the Gambian side. They have played confidently. However, their passes need improvement.
The senegalese weren't bad either but they were made to look ordinary.
I am down some how cos this was an opportunity to make our visit to Dakar which would be the last group match( i guess)easy.
Anyway am generally impressed and proud by both teams. |
