What citizen is a child who was born in an aeroplane in the international air space? Would the child be considered a citizen of the parents country of birth? What if the father is a Gambian by Birth (But also has UK citizenship) and the mother a British? This is my assignment to the Bantaba members until I come back.Thank you all for educating me.I learn a lot from you.My lecturers.

Hi Kondorong,
I would think the child would be a British Citizen unless going to the US or Ireland. Seriously I would think the child would still classed as British.

Well this child is a lucky one. The fact that he was born in international airspace makes him a world citizen. however to be more practical he could claim citizenship in the following manner.
1. He could claim citizenship of Gambia through his father who by Gambian law can have dual citizenship.
2. he could be a citizen of the United Kingdom through both father or Mother becasue under british law the child needs only have one of his parents being a citizen of the Unite kingdom. Both parents are infact citizens of the UK.
3. even if the parents were stateless, i think he could claim citizenship of the country in which the aircraft is registered. In international territory sovereingty is respected and accorded to those who are in those regions of the world.

Why do you think the child would not like to be Gambian if that is what is chosen for him? |

I would like to thank you all for the responce to this thread. It is only by open disscussion that change can be brought about to the betterment of the Gabian people. who I found in the main to be friendly, honest and law abideing. Finaly for the record my thread was not posted in any Gambian Chat rooms only to the following. Gambia Tourist Support web site, The National Observer newspaper also Gambia Experience tour operator. Indeed I would like to hear from anyone with details of any Gambian web sites or chat rooms as i would like to communicate and make friends as I have in Senegal and Guinea also Ghana Once again thank you all |
