This summer, if I am correct in the week from the 26st of june, the African Union will have its meeting in Gambia. I have read in the papers that 25 heads of state will attend this meeting together with 3500 government officials. In europe most travelagencies just keep on selling their holidays for that week, only Travelpoort warns that there might not be accomodation for guests.
What is your opninion, can guests go to the hotels and restaurants or is everything completely taken by all the delegations?
I remember from previous statevisits that mosr roads in Combo were blocked for hours, so what will happen with 25 heads of state, will all the roads be blocked or open to visitors.
If all hotels are taken and all restaurants full and roads blocked ,it might be better to send a warning to foreign tourists not to come that week but come later to prevent Gambia getting a bad name in tourisme and to prevent big disapointments with tourists
What is your opinion?
regards
roger

i am sure accomodation will be okay for the tourists who want to travel then, but the traffice diversion and delays will horrendous and the airport a nightmare. also the AU is in town for longer than a week.

Gambia will not be closed for business. Tourist are advised to check with their tour operators for availability of accommodation before departure.

I was in Gambia 3 weeks ago and in my opinion it will be a nightmare during the summit. (The first problem is where will they get the space to park an additional 20 planes??. Apparently a contract was signed 18 months ago but the area is not ready yet!!!.)
There are demands for an additional 2,200 rooms over and above what the "tourist" hotels can accomodate. GTA has requested from guesthouses assistance and I am full sure that the tourist hotels will be taken over. It would be best to check with your tour operator before you travel.

Just imagine when yaya is about to travel, trafic is closed sometimes four hours before his actual journey; what will happen if we have 25 heads of state in the country each having their own schedule of travel?
