It's not good, I agree. Just proves there is no freedom of speech!

It is true, it's 'The Independent'/Banjul.
I found the message on http://allafrica.com/gambia and at 'reporters sans frontières' (www.rsf.org).

'reporters sans frontières', an international organisation for freedom of press, sent a protest note to the Gambian government. It seems that the incident has something to do with an article dated from 27 March. There the newspaper asked how rich Jammeh might be...

I feel very sorry for my Gambian collegues. Maybe someone out there can give them my solidarious greetings.

Greetings all, Babygirl, The Criminal Code Amendment Bill/2004 – Section 178 amendment reads, “ANY PERSON who by print, writing, printing, effigy, caricature, cartoon or depiction or by any means
, otherwise than solely by gestures, spoken words, or other sounds, unlawful publishes any defamatory matter concerning another person with the intent to defame the person, is guilty of the offence termed libel and liable to imprisonment for a term not less than six months, without the option of a fine.

from observer months back...in an undistributed issue of the official Gambia Gazette dated 30 December, the president’s office promulgated
a criminal code amendment that was passed by the national assembly on 14 December. The amendment, which changes the press code, stipulates that publishing deliberately defamatory comments or publishing inaccurate news - deliberately or not - is punishable by a prison sentence of six months or more. Seditious comments are punishable by six months in prison for the first conviction and three years for
subsequent convictions. According to the Gambia Gazette, Jammeh signed this into law on 28 December.

If you go back to Dec 2004 & Jan 2005 on the Old Forum and pick up the media legislation threads, then you may piece together what is happening if you were not aware.

When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it - always.. Freedom & peace / sab

The world would be a poorer place if it was peopled by children whose parents risked nothing in the cause of social justice, for fear of personal loss. (Joe Slovo - African revolutionary)

we need patriotic journalist who can write master piece about our comrade yaya. They all failed to write a good piece and yaya is mad. PEOPLE MUST LOVE THEIR LEADERS including journalists. You see jilanka is a true son of africa and we have to praise him because he is right. From now on it wil be do as i say, say as i say and write good things about APRC.

Journalism is about praising your leader and that is why we are having problem with them. We the green boys dont like that. Every christmas, tobaski, yayas birthday, his daughters birthday, his wifes birthday, his mothers birthday, his fathers birthday, his marriage anniversary, his july 22nd not independece day, alll the papers say thank you sir for all the help. yaya likes that. every paper has full page of the president. That is development and should continue. Yaya is royal. Dont you know that.

he has horses nad rides them like Outhman Danfodio who is his role model. Cant you see his head scarf. He is a proud son of africa and we have to likehim. Every one is guilty until proven guilty. Yaya is rich because he owns the money and he is helping every body by send them fish money. No president is doing that. he likes his people but he has to enjoy too.

Dear Sankofa, your ideas about journalism are really sweet; I hope you are kidding. There is an ironical German term about what you mean (Hofberichterstattung - I am sorry, I don't know the English expression), and journalism like that is not only useless, it bores to death. Nobody will read this. Go to any press agency or publishing house in the world with your ideas, and they will call the psychiatrists.

After all, as you are making a god of your President you are sinfully blasphemic. Shame on you. Nobody but Allah is free of errors and mistakes!!

Besides this, I think the press should by all means stay fair.

I will arrange with a meeting with yaya. You will respect him. The man likes money and he will print some for you and i bet you will be quiet. He will give you the magic water to take to germany and pour it in the Rhur river and all your former factories and industries will be lively again. germany will have a lot of jobs on condition that you open a bank account for him there. And dont forget and me too so that i can be close to my man

No joke, I really would like to meet him. As we are supposed to be both Gemini, it would be an interesting conversation.
