njucks, a great article. I also think that Jenkins' critical words legitimately include Germany, USA, France, etc.
But I hope you don't think I mean we in Europe/USA should tell others about democracy. On the contrary, what makes me angry is the hypocritical, even cynical way our politicians abuse this term: E.g. the German chancellor, Ms Merkel, criticised Putin as anti-democratic on her visit last summer, while at the same time the German police arrested peaceful anti globalisation activists. Mr. Bush slobbers about democracy, freedom and human rights while supporting someone like Pervez Musharraf. That's what I mean.
By the way, I don't even think that democracy is suitable for every nation. Every nation should decide about its own kind of government - uninfluenced by foreign opinions/interests, and no matter if the ruling classes of foreign countries like it or not... |

i agree with both your articles. even amonsgt western nations democracy takes different forms. but the Hypocrisy as you said is the lack of consistency or double standards.
China is the darling now, even though its a communist state, no vote, no free religious practice, unfair trade practices etc. Even Mugabe was OK when he killed more people then no one said anything, so was Saddam in the 1980s. the UK and USA both vetoed several security council Resoltuions on Apartheid to protect their interests.
as the world develops, or gets closer through the internet the long term damage to their credibility will become apparent.
