Baboucarr Gaye Passes Away
The Demise of an Independent Journalist

News has reached FOROYAA of the demise of the respected and independent minded journalist, Baboucarr Gaye, who passed away yesterday morning after an illness.
The 56 year old is survived by his wife and five children, four boys and one girl.
After completing his schooling at Gambia High School, Mr. Gaye was employed at Radio Gambia as a broadcaster. But he resigned at the age of 27.

Mr. Gaye established the Senegambia Sun which lasted from 1983 to 1985. He, together with the late Deyda Hydara and Pap Saine founded The Point in 1991, but he left the paper in April 1992. He later founded another newspaper, Newsmonth. The last newspaper he founded was New Citizen.

But Baboucarr Gaye’s most remarkable success is Citizen FM Radio station which had been closed down twice without any court order. The radio was an alternative source of information which broadcast news and comments from any personality that was willing to talk. The most popular programme which got all sorts of people glued to their radio in the morning was the translation of news and commentaries published by local newspapers. Baboucarr Gaye was also a BBC correspondent. Mr Gaye is respected by those who worked with him. He is described by a former co-worker and colleague, Mr. Cole, as fearless and committed to his principles, as a very honest person who does not compromise the truth. Mr. Suwaibou Conateh, the director of Radio Gambia when Mr. Gaye was working there, described Mr. Gaye as professional and committed to his principles.

A good number of people visited his family yesterday to express their condolence. He will be interned this evening at Jeshwang cemetery after funeral service at the Independence Drive Mosque in Banjul at 4 pm today.
