Canonical... caretakers of the Ubuntu Linux distro released their latest desktop edition on Friday (Oct 18th).It comes sporting a raft of new features that just may just give it the best chance to take share away from Windows on the desktop.

http://www.wired.com/software/softwarereviews/news/2007/10/ubuntu_gutsy

Ubuntu 7.10 or Gutsy Gibbon has some industry analyst all giddy up. What you may ask is responsible for this? For starters it is the 3D graphical interface that comes standard with it,along with its automatic printer driver installation. The latter has perpetually stood as one of the annoying roadblocks for wide audience acceptance of Linux by desktop users. Many users have walked away from their first installation of Linux on a desktop machine because they couldn't get it to work with both new and older printers in their shops.

The flashy new graphical interface may prove to be more than just eye candy. Linux has had a couple of other graphical interfaces before, but none as rich-looking as this one. Some are boldly saying that version 7.10's 3D interface, built on top of the Gnome 2.20 desktop, will give Windows Vista and Apple's upcoming Leopard a run for their money.

The new version also contains improvements for laptop users. It offers full external VGA support right out of the box, and can be more easily configured when hardware is switched around. Also, new support for automatic firmware installation for Broadcom Wi-Fi cards has been added.

So far, larger IT shops have been more interested in the idea of Linux on the desktop than in actually HAVING it on their desktops. That interest has stemmed from wanting to eliminate the expensive licensing fees Microsoft imposes on Windows users, along with a
handful of other technical shortcomings. But with the underwhelming response to Vista among corporate accounts -- many of whom claim to have no plans to deploy the operating system this year and even next -- coupled with Ubuntu 7.10's set of capabilities, the door has never been more open for a Linux offering to walk through.

Openoffice that comes with Ubuntu is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and is compatible with all other major office suites including Microsoft’s word, excel, etc.
The educational programs in Ubuntu are some of the features I find interesting for my children and they love them.

Toubab,
Go for it. You can test Ubuntu on your system without installing anything. That is the beauty of the live CD component of Linux distros. This is one way you can familiarize yourself with the operating system and see if it fits your bill. If you like it, you install, otherwise you call it quit without making any changes to the system your are running. By the way you can install most windows centric programs on Linux using wine. Automatix is another nifty tool that beginners can use to install their favorite applications on Ubuntu. If you are not conversant with the intricacies of the terminal, then you will love automatix.

Momodou is right about the openoffice substitute for microsoft office that comes installed with most linux distros. Unless you are running a corporation, it should be good enough for all your word processing needs. With its ODF formating, you should be able to read and edit almost any microsoft office document.

Furthermore, my posting are a product of the topic been discuss. I agree with you that simple is good, but when we are discussing technical issues, we sometimes slip into that jargon without malice. I will pay more attention to that...after all what good is the information if the audience doesn't get it.

The Edubuntu edition is really helpful to children. I am glad to know the kiddos love it. You starting them on open source early...they may end up detesting proprietary software...laugh.

Toubab,

Wine in this instance is not the consumable kind. Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix.

You can think of Wine in this scenario as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs on Linux machines. Simple is good indeed.

Yes, I knew it was somewhat complicated but my use of the term "wine" was to be taken in the context of its normal meaning and meant as a joke(OK you knew that ) even though I am ignorant of "compatibility layers" I take it they are not blankets and sheets used on a bed to keep you warm on cold nights. I really do think that simple is good!! Anyway a little humor does not go amiss in this problematic world
