I wouldnīt put this question here if it was not that my Gambian friend is going to bring this equipment (HP LaserJet 3150 All-in-one) to the Gambia quite soon. Itīs a second hand printer without document and I am trying to test it. To make a copy works fine without computer but I canīt make it to print from my computer .
After connecting the printer to the computer a window opened with a catalogue of different models but this model is not there. I then went to this link http://welcome.hp.com/country/se/sv/welcome.html and then to programs &software, chose Windows XP and clicked on Download and received 6 files. (One of the files is called Oemsetup Installationinformation. Rightclicking on it opens a command installation but nothing happens.) I marked LaserJet as a default printer, restarted my computer and tried to print out a page. Printer icon appears but no copy comes out. Canīt figure out what I have to do.
Any help will be much appreciated!

Ousman, sorry for asking again. I have downloaded, up comes a window Winzip Self Extractor. I pressed on unzip, I guess it is what I had to do. Is it all done now as I can sex new files on my hard drive? If I copy the files over to a CD-R it will be sufficient for someone (in the Gambia) who knows how to do?
What does this mean: "This is a host based printer driver."?
Thanks. |

Kiwi,
The print drivers will not install just by unzipping them. That is where the fun begins. The files were extracted to a directory on your c drive with a default name such as C:\lj3150. You will need to unplug your printer from the computer and plug it in again. Your system should detect the presence of a new hardware and try to install it. However this is not going to happen by itself. A wizard must likely will pop up, helping you through the install. You will have to point to the location of the extracted files for the system to install your print drivers. Without the drivers, the printer cannot communicate with the computer period. If the files are sitting on your C: drive, someone in the Gambia should be able to install the print drivers and have the printer functioning. You don't have to burn them to a CD.
You asked: What does this mean: "This is a host based printer driver."?
Well traditional printers contain a processor, programming, and memory in addition to their mechanical components. Applications send character codes and shape commands directly to the printer. The printer then uses its internal processor and memory to process those into the necessary paper movement and print head movements that "draw" characters and lines on the page.
However, Host-based (or "Windows only") printers do not have the processor, programming, or memory inside. These components have been eliminated from the printer's design in order to cut costs making the printer less expensive to manufacture, and cheaper to purchase. By themselves, these printers are essentially "brain dead", and cannot respond to character codes or print commands.
So how do host-based printers work? They rely on a Windows printer driver, and your computer's processor and memory, to do the work that is performed internally by traditional printers. Character codes and drawing commands flow from your application software to the Windows printer driver, where they are processed into paper movement and print head commands that are sent to the printer.
This is the reason behind the download and installation of print drivers from HP. I hope that helps. Installing drivers is a simple task, but again it could be a pain for the un-initiated.

Ok, Iīll try it once more tomorrow (after buying some wine, toubab).
The reason why I want to burn it to CD is that my computer is not going to Gambia, only the printer. Of course, if the receiver has an internet connection he can do the jobb himself. |

Kiwi,
In that case burn it to a CD. The internet connection in the Gambia is slow and downloading a 19MB file on such a connection...well I don't want to think about the hassle.
Make sure you get that Wine...toubab recommended. |

The funny (?) thing is that is was not an installation problem at all but putting a sheet of paper into a right input, there are several inputs and outputs. Anyway, good for me to know that we are sending a printer that actually works. Thanks for your support! |
